      Hi All,

I’m new to the forum, please be gentle! I picked up an Elliott Omnimill 00 earlier this year, which I’m in the process of restoring.

At some point in it’s history the original quill clamp bar/handle has been replaced with a bit of bent M8 threaded rod and a couple of nuts. I’d like to make a new handle as close as possible to the original. I guess the original would have been 5/16″ UNC or Whit (there appears to be an odd mix of both on this machine). Would an Omnimill owner be so kind as to pop the handle out and take a photo with a scale so I can knock one up?

      Cheers,

      Rich

Either UNC or Whitworth would work equally well. I take it the lock is on the left side just below the round plate. Making a handle out of a suitable machinable stainless steel would be best, it can be threaded both ends and then bent to the right angle afterward, and the clamp nuts can be made from brass as one piece before producing the curved ends to match the diameter of the quill and then cut. Only the right hand nut has the thread, the left one has a clearance hole

Lathes UK website have lots of info and pictures of Elliot mills and probably sell a manual which would be useful.

There is an Elliott group on groups.io

It used to be rather more active in the yahoo days but still has some useful information.

This dumb forum won’t let me insert multiple pictures!  Knob is 1.25″ diameter, bar is 0.436″ diameter, distance from end of thread to shoulder is 2.445″. Hope that helps.

              Paul.

Paul’s locking bar shows why I recommended making it out of stainless steel, that one has the shaft electroplated by the manufacturer.

Post a picture, hit return, post next picture, hit return, etc.

That’s assuming you have a keyboard with a return key!  I normally use an iPad but the pictures were on my phone (Google pixel) which resolutely refuses to communicate with any apple devices by any means – wonder why????  So I had to post it from my phone and once a picture is selected you can’t get the keyboard to pop up again on the screen – I tried half a dozen times doing different things but only managed to replace the original with a new picture.  Once the picture was there the text disappeared until it was posted.

The other forum I use I can upload my pictures to the forum from my phone and then write a post on iPad and insert them from my album, nice and simple.  I am afraid if it’s not intuitive on how to do something I really can’t be bothered.

                    Paul.

I get it, a lot of technology seems to be just making things that used to be easy, more complex – I have a television that questions every instruction I give it..
