I'm currently restoring an Elliott Jig Borer MK1 which is missing the automatic feed lever and stop mechanism. Would anyone know of one being broken down or a source of spares?

Hi Gwilym, Looking at the machine on http://www.lathes.co.uk and this photo of the Downham **LINK** it does not look too difficult to fabricate the lever from solid or welded parts. The Elliot looks slightly different but very similar and the photo is not as good.

Anyway good luck with your search for one from a breaker but I don't think its a high chance.

Thanks, fabrication was going to be my fallback position. I was aiming for all original parts but having been through a lot of photos, a small block of cast iron and some rod should allow me to produce something very close to the original.

I've stripped the rest of the machine for painting and have dismantled and cleaned head and gear box. Time to put it back together again.

Hi, I've recently bought a Downham Mini Borer which I believe is the same as the Elliott. It has the feed lever so if I can provide you with any photos and measurements let me know. It looks to be made of brass or bronze.

                Cheers

Hi Steve, thanks for the offer. A picture would be very helpful especially to compare to the Lathes.com photos.

My assumption was that the main feed assembly was cast iron and the actual handle was satin chrome steel with a black plastic ball.

I've used the photos to determine approximate sizes and shapes and will make a wooden template. Once I'm happy with the shape and functionality I have a chuck of cast iron to machine.

                  Cheers

                  Gwilym

Hope this helps. Happy to take some measurements.

                      Hi Steve,

That's the handle assembly. I have some measurements taken from photos but it you can take them from the actual casting it would be great.

If you could provide some dimensions for the adjuster rod as well as mine is missing as well.

                      Thanks

                          Steve,

Thanks for all the effort in documenting the handle. I'll study in detail this weekend.

My machine is in pieces and slowly coming back. Just bought a 10 ton press so I can change a bearing, so that will be a task for the weekend.

I'll mock up a part in wood to get a feel on how I'll be able to machine this.

                          Cheers

                            Hi Everyone,

Not sure if this thread is still 'live' but I'm also rebuilding a Downham Mini-Jig Borer!

My problem is a missing support strap (not sure what it's called but I've marked it in photo 2 with a red blob).

What I could do with is a scale drawing (or tracing from the part) so that I could make up a new one from a bit of scrap plate.

                            Thanks

                            Zeek

I'll have a go at getting some dimensions but I'm not sure it's a part I'd be able to take off to measure accurately. I'll see what I can do. I won't be for a week or so as I'm not around the workshop at the moment.

                                  Cheers Steve

Thanks & no hurry – it's been sitting in the garage for five years! PLEASE don't strip it down – I just need a rough doulble-check for my estimation using the bits I still have.

BTW, I loved the photo's of your 'epic journey' – reminded me when I had to collect & bring home mine when I bought it.

I took it apart – even then it was VERY heavyi The guy who sold it to me was a body-builder, so no problems getting it in the Jeep, then I got home, and my wife didn't seem so keen …

                                            Hi Guys,

I'm still restoring my borer, but have one small issue.

The oiling point on the quik has got some unusual (at least for me…) oiler – it is just a couple of slit rubber/plastic membranes held my some sort of washer push fitted into the hole on the quill – sory for amateurish termonilogy.

Mine one is broke – do you know where I could get replacement parts?

I have created an "Elliot jig borer" album if you want to have a look – I'm struggling to insert photos from there in here…

                                            Cheers,

                                                    .

The oiling point on the quik has got some unusual (at least for me…) oiler – it is just a couple of slit rubber/plastic membranes held my some sort of washer push fitted into the hole on the quill – sory for amateurish termonilogy.

Mine one is broke – do you know where I could get replacement parts?

                                                    .

I found some information about those a short while back …

                                                      Hi Guys,

Still working on getting my Elliot restored…

Now I'm struggling with getting right belts for quill feed. The originals were Fenner 2150 4 16; and 2180 4 23.

Any advice what would be their replacement and where could I get them?

                                                      Tanks,

                                                      Martin
