The Australian Census took place on Tuesday. All the usual suspects urged Australians to fill in the form 'on-line'. Various threats of fines for non-compliance were mentioned.

One is required give name & address and the data-retention time has been increased from 18 months to 4 years. (99 years if you tick the right box)!

At the end of the day, so many cyber-attacks from overseas (DDoS) occurred that the whole system crashed.

Not many people managed to input their data online on Tuesday night.

Fortunately I had the option of submitting a paper form as I refused to give my data online. 'They' claimed that 'their' computers were secure – Lol, can they guarantee that my pc is secure?

There has been a lot of talk lately about moving Australia to 'On-Line' voting for elections. Cynical old me does not trust what can be manipulated by a smart hacker – Tuesday's experience unveiled another serious flaw.

George Orwell was correct – Be very careful of Big Brother!

          On the flip side:

They'll eventually do themselves out of a job once things get online

It's the first step towards direct democracy where we can all vote on whatever issue is on the cards, locally or nationally

In the UK we can use our HMRC account. If it's good enough for our taxes then it's good enough for our vote

From what I heard on the radio this afternoon, the site was still down. Someone over this side of the ditch suggested on line voting, and the warning from a number of "experts" was don't do it, they were forecasting similar results to your show over there. Hear the PM was more than a little annoyed.

I have to say the big thing in the UK is postal voting, most or alot of people either can't or don't want to go to a ballot box so it's much easier to have your vote posted. So long as you can figure out getting all the envelopes in the right order it's pretty safe, for the naysayers who say "don't use a pencil", for the record, they actually ask you NOT to use one anyway and black pen, every ten years or so they get you to verify your signature.

I wouldn't use online simply because they've "piloted it" here in the UK by allowing people to use online petitions to get a govt answer, it's been proven to be unreliable and many falsified signatories added to it. The site went down for voter registration on the referendum and they extended the time, was alot of uproar about it.

As we all know garauntees of security dont mean jack once it's compromised, you can't cash in a promise. I learn't the hard way with Macafee internet security, now i don't use it and stick to anti malware detection.

When I lived in Northern Ireland many many years ago there was a saying "Vote early, Vote often"

If the attacks were from out of the country just turn them off. Can't be more than a couple of dozen trunk routes onto the island. The problem is finding someone who actually has brain cells to be in charge.

The funniest thing i heard that this so callled hacking was from the Chinese in direct retaliation for the comments one of our swimmers made against a Chinese swimmer !

                      Hogwash !!!!!

I don't think the hacking was a threat just the Government covering up its ineptitude again .

The questions asked did not ask for anything that is not already common knowledge as far as the Government is concerned .

D.O.B, approx income , marital status, where i live ,religion etc are all common knowledge to the Government as it is with the exception of religion all on my tax return and my tax agent keeps a copy on file that could be hacked just as easy as any other site .

Half of that info i have to fill out just to subscribe to a magazine !

The day they bring in online voting will be the happiest day in my life , i detest the the waste of my day standing in a very long que to fill out a piece of paper that gets more complicated every year just to vote for some twit i don't like anyway but dislike that person less than the rest !

For the moment i will stick with the pre poll voting .

Name withheld – they might be watching us !
