These work well, I've used them in model aeroplanes as well as fitting one to a model stationary engine, although it's probably overkill for the stationary engine. A small motorcycle coil and points seems to work just as well, but the one linked to can run off a small battery pack.

What is the engine, some of the ones that they suggest a buzz coil for do not work so well on a single spark, the buzz type proveides a series of sparks over a longer period of time which does suit some of the slower running designs.

Watch some of the RC engine ones as they often have auto advance and get confused ifused on teh timing gear of a 4-stroke rather than straight off the crank of a faster reving two stroke.

I mostly use the ignitions from S/S in the States but teh small cdi from Minimag here in teh UK is said to be good.

I have also got one of these on its way to me, worth having a play as they are only a few quid

                  .

                  What engine is it for.?

The reason I ask is I was reading recently that for slow revving engines (such as a hit and miss) that the best ignition source is a buzz coil. – Reason being it gives a longer drawn out spark.

I did use recently a CDI unit from S/S on a Hogglet that Jason suggested. It worked well, and a good company to deal with.

The 3 to 6v 'death box' that Jason posted looks like the innards out of a Tazer – nice!

I typed in high voltage coil on ebay , lowest price first and a whole pile of them appered on my screen !

I don't know how long they would last on an engine and getting the dwell angle correct to get the coil to charge fully may be an issue on higher reving motors but for a couple of bucks its worth trying .

I use the minimag electronic system on a vintage 3hp 1929 Witte engine. It is excellent.

Two different types ordered, they would suit a simple spark erosion device.

                                From E-bay, where elsesmiley

I have also got a couple of the gas lighters that Jan Ridders uses to make small ignitions but not tried them on an engine yet but they are very compact and give a good spark.

I should have said that S/S do an electronic version of a buzz coil, it is on the site I linked to. If you want traditional Buzz coils then Engineers Emporium do them and will also supply just the traditional contacts if you want to make your own which works out a lot cheaper.

Thanks for all the replies to my query about ignition systems I will look at some of links ,I have used a cdi ignition unit for rc models and that works quite well
