Electric motor

I have a small bench drill similar size to a Katsu but traditional construction with motor at top behind column. I want to buy a small variable speed motor ,pulleyed down as I dont need 7000rpm! I have no idea what power though .Cant spend huge amount on it . I d much rather keep it than buy a Katsu ,I dont know if they d last long or be powerful enough. Up to 4mm drilling steel,brass,bronze.

Hi Jonti,

Welcome to the forum. ARC sell spares – including motors and controllers – for their machines, may be you could find something suitable there. IIRC the smallest motor is 150w (for the C0 or C1), next is 250W (for the C2). These are brushed DC motors. The SC2 has a brushless 500W DC motor, may be larger than you need.

The Katsu uses a 150W motor. For a similar unit like yours, the suggested offering from ARC as a replacement motor will cost you quite a few £. I would have thought any one of the hundreds of variable speed sewing machine motors for sale on ebay / Amazon would fit the bill, and at a much lower cost

What type of motor is fitted to the drill now? Many of hese small high-speed drills use a "universal" brushed AC/DC motor. These are very easy to speed control with a simple very low cost phase angle controller.
A picture of motor and rating plate would help.

No motor at present Robert but ARC good place to go. Hadnt realised they sold seperately. Thank you. Jonathon
