I couldn’t find anywhere else to put this and it’ll probably be deleted but ,

has anyone else had an e-mail from myhobbystore concerning the Supermarine Spitfire model kit?

 

I know it’s a misprint but I had to share this, it’s a direct quote from the e-mail      ”  This 1:32 scale plastic assembly model kit of the Supermarine Spitfire MK.VIII was first used in service in the summer of 1943.”

 

one has to wonder what the strike capability of a 1/32nd model plane is.

Was it a reconnaissance model that could be flown into rooms to photograph the German plans or perhaps it was to combat the 1/32 scale plastic Junkers?. Your guess is as good as mine  but I expect it helped to win the war somehow!!!

 

They don’t teach English proper these days not like what we was teached

The question I ask is would it have made a difference if the email/advert was re-read? Because if you don’t know what is right you certainly can’t tell what is wrong. Down to quotas of pupils having to achieve meaningless targets. They are not taught to spell or to use grammar correctly in the beginning as this may hamper their development/creativity. Why waste pupil’s time by allowing this and then having to re-educate them to correct the methods they were taught.

 

It’s like letting a load of kids loose with big hammers and telling them to true up a lathe and then saying “Well really we don’t use hammers and this is how you should do it!”

 

Sorry rant over as more students get better GCSE results, perhaps next year the results will be judged by ‘Limbo Dancers’ as the bar will have got so low .

Andy, what is your view on ‘different to’ and ‘different from’ please?

I’m sure my English teacher would be most unhappy with the way English is both spoken and written these days.

Well spotted  I would like to say that it was a deliberate mistake but no one would believe me; especially as I owned up to a typo re achieve,’ i’ before ‘e’ etc. etc. !!!!!  Used a semi colon cause its on the keyboard and is underutilized these days, the spell checker joined under and utilised.

 

Take care and it’s good to know that there are people out there that read the words.

Hi, maybe the War Office missinterpreted the information when they heard about General Feild Marshal Walter Model’s army in 1944 and though they had to scale down thier attack.

Your English is fine, apart from the three spelling mistakes.

did you mean ‘Because’ in your second sentence rather than ‘Cause’ which is a verb.  Of course you could have used ’cause’ in your third sentence instead of ‘Down to,’ as that sentence is actually meaningless if read literally. The meaning is, of course, understandable despite the colloquial rather than grammatically correct writing style.  However, I may have missed the irony if that was intended. Also, although the semi colon may be under utilised the exclamation mark is certainly over utilised!

 

By the way, as an ex-teacher (not English I may add) some of the worst spelling and grammar I have seen occurs on forums, including this one, by the more mature members.

I think he meant     ‘cos    because he was using the vernacular.

 

Perhaps we could have rational spelling like the Germans, where you can usually spell  any word correctly the first time you hear it. (Assuming that you are much better at German than I am….)

 

Didn’t the British (English?) have a “New Model Army” long ago, 1645 or so…
