"The technology institute will "tackle head-on the dearth of skilled engineers in the UK".

Why would there be engineers in the UK when manufacturing, including Dyson's, has moved offshore? Engineers are not made in design studios, research labs and marketing think tanks. They are made in factories, where the machinery is. Want engineers, Sir James? Try looking in Malaysia where your factories are.

Hi and good morning, I must be missing something ,but maybe not ,if James Dyson thinks training an engineer takes six months he can't be much of a engineer himself could be wrong 😜 We all know it's grandstanding , don't we ?Stewart .

I don't know that he ever trained/worked as an engineer himself? Seems to be more of an entrepreneur than an engineer, what was once disparagingly referred to as " a bit of a wheeler-dealer". The world has been taken over by Arfur Daleys.

I think you're right Hopper , All though I am not mr Dysons biggest fan we have to admire his cheek , I don't think I would have thought for one minute that there was room for another vac in the already over supplied machine cleaning market . I guess that's why I'm not a millionaire . It just shows what you can do with some well TRAINED engineers advertising and a bit of luck. Stewart

The six months was a joke based on my experience of the original Dyson vacuum cleaners.

The current rechargable one seems more robust.

having had to repair my neighbours Dyson in the past I would comment that the principle of them is ok but they are built out of c***p

“but they are built out of c***p” – I thought I was the only one who wanted to cry emperor’s new clothes at the Dyson over hyped empire – cheaply engineered and often poorly designed – stupid things like the belt drive to the beater brush that churns thru belts yet are difficult to get at – maybe later models have fixed this but the machines were sold to gullible housewives (eg my mother) at a high markup on basis of a somewhat dodgy patent + much advertising
