Dunlop Taper Bushes

I am looking to fix a home machined pulley to a motor shaft using a Dunlop taper bush.

It is possible to purchase a bolt-on hub (female) to afix to the pulley which will mate with the bush (male) perfectly.

However, the dimensions of the hub are too large for my pulley – I think they are meant to be used on a fan etc.

Does anyone have experience of this machining task? I am happy with measuring and reproducing the exact taper but the location of the half-holes seems more problematical.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Fenner produce adaptors beyond the bolt on style for Taper Lock Bushes, their 'hub adaptors' may be worth a look.

Hello Stephen,

They also are known as taper lock hub bushes. Google for suppliers and the many various sizes available, they are not expensive..

A point to be aware of is that the two holes that accept the clamping grub screws are NOT across a diameter, they are displaced at 5 degrees below centre on either side to enhance the collapsing action of the bore onto the motor shaft. The hub cone angle is 8 degrees

That is yet another type.  The 'hub adaptor' is a split bushing (with or without a keyway) and sits in a cylindrical hole.

I do have a drawing showing all dimensions somewhere. Remember there are two holes to hold the taper lock in and the threaded to act as an extractor. Will dig out drawings and get back unless someone beats me to it.

You might get more sense in terms of what the dimensions are, and what fits what, etc by going to a 'bearing supplier' (at least, in the UK). I have had good service from Bearing Boys, and Simply Bearings, and yes, they do pulleys and belts, and all sorts of useful stuff, not just bearings.

Agree with Tim about going to "bearing suppliers". I got some bolt on ones from Engineers Mate some years ago which were fine. They still list such things, not cheap tho'. **LINK**
