If anyone wants to make a tapping stand Lidl have a cheap drill stand with vise on Thursday for £13.00.

Some of their gear is pretty good and a bit of a bargain, I’ll look out for that one, cheers.

I noticed them trying to flog a carbon steel tapping set recently but I’m inclined towards hss only.
Anyone find that carbon steel is any good for these kind of things?

Carbon steel taps are sharper but they break if you look at them too hard.

I had a set. note the word ‘had’.

I find that these cheap sets are only good for clearing paint out of tapped holes. I would advoid.

I recently discovered a design ‘feature’ of a cheap set of taps…
They have no taper! a 60deg point, like a lather centre, then straight – like a bolt with grooves down the side!
really hard to start – in the end, i stuck it in the drill press, briefly hit the power switch to get it spinning then rammed it into the work. Sheer brute force got it to bite, but its obvious i have another ‘investment’ on the horizon. (actually, 2 sets, both metric, have the same ‘feature’ – maybe i could grind a taper onto 1 set?)

Just don’t freeze the butter too hard.
The 60* point is a male center used in the manufacture, you’ll find it on the best of taps as well as the worst, yep grind it of, you seem to have just bought a plug/ or finishing tap. I must grind the sharp point from the other end of my 3/8″ UNF tap, it hurts. Ian S C

I find these cheap tap sets invaluable. I,ve just been fixing my brakes on the truck, stripped a M12 fine nut, only tap was in the cheapo box. Why spoil good taps and dies when cleaning up threads when you can ruin cheap ones?

The tap set recently on offer from Lidl has seven taps and tapping drills, the taps work fine while the drills are 4 facet drills! you also get a wrench in a steel box for next to nothing. So I’m very glad that Ady didn’t get my set. As Gordon said they have their uses. Their value is as a standby when you have just lost or broken your good tap and you have to finish the job.

There have been numerous other offers, recently some wood carving chisels came up, they look exactly the same as sold by a national chain for almost exactly twice the price. The quality of the steel is very good for the price, Even when you pay £30 for a single wood chisel you still need to polish the back and hone the bevels. So I am very happy to check what the German Supermarkets have on offer, The drill stand into a “Universal Pillar Tool” conversion by Mike Cox might shift a few more stands when they come up.

My £8 Aldi cook’s blowtorch is essentaily the same as one sold by various suppliers at over three times the price – and it came with a can of gas. Great for silver soldering small items.

Their step dril set cost <£5 and appears the same as much more expensive sets too.

I got the drill stand today and this is bargain of the month if you don’t have one or you’re trying to build up a wee workshop.

The cheapo cast aluminium vice which comes with it costs between 6 and 10 quid from fleabay, never mind the rest of the setup.
                            All for 12.99

So if you’re in the market for a cheapo drill press, definitely grab this one from lidl.

Talk about bargain of the month from Aldi.

I went back there today to have another look at the 710 watt reciprocating power saw that three weeks ago they were selling for £25.
Imagine my surprise when I discovered they were now selling it for £14.99 with a three year guarantee.

It looks and feels very substantial so I snapped one up and hopefully will put it through it’s paces later on.

Well, just tried the saw out on a piece of 1/2″ dia. chinese steel and it whistled through it in a few seconds.
Not an intensive test I know but the severe one will come tomorrow.
No trace of damage on the bi-metal blade either.

Is this the drill stand Michael Cox used for his staking tool?

I bought an identical one from Machine Mart and to be honest, I thought it was useless. It was hopelessly inaccurate and the (white metal AFAICS) quick release vice is the only tool I’ve seriously considered taking to the tip without using.

the one I bought didn’t have a vise so I don’t know what that’s like either.

It’s definitely not a pro bit of kit but I’ve been drilling holes by hand for two years now and it’s a big improvement for my own situation.

Any accurate holes I need I do on the lathe with the DRO, it’s for general zap and tap ones, for bits ‘n bobs.

Small drills fly straight through the metal so it’s good for that 1st hole scenario
I tried a 9mm drill with no small hole and the lack of stiffness was so bad it vibrated and bounced about lol
When I come to upgrade to a decent bit of kit I’ll have a better idea what to look for now too.
