      Hi Roderick

Thanks! – you've saved me hours and hours of searching through my old copies of MEW.

You say you have one of these – how effective is it and how easy do you find it to use?

      regards

      Norman

        Norman,

Well, it works but success is dependent on inpecting the cutting edges to ensure that they are equal and the kit includes a loupe to do that. I have to confess that my usual approach to sharpening small drills is to buy new ones. Handy to have in an emergency though.

        So, damned by faint praise.

        cheers,

        Rod

          Norman,

I have found ordered and downloaded a copy of the second Derek Brown article on "Four Facet Drill Sharpening" dated 16th Aug 1996 ! This article discusses a few improvements made over the original design.

I can't post the info as you have to pay the back issue (article) price (£4) to order this.

Beware though as its a photocopy in pdf format so takes quite a bit of manipulation to get one page of the two magazine pages per image on one A4 printed page.

I am however drawing the parts in Google SketchUp (prior to making them) and I may post one or two images here which I assume is ok (If the moderator reads this can you comment please)

If anyone has a way to contact Derek I will ask him about this too.

This jig avoids the twist and turn actions required using the "Wishbone" which is however an interesting and much simpler approach which could easily be modified to cut four facets.

          Regards

Given the cost of small drill bits these days I doubt many folks are interested in sharpening small drill bits, except as rod says in an emergency.

I can't help thinking though that there is a really simple efficient design out there waiting to be discovered for sharpening larger drill bits. Most of the designs I've seen are not "idiot proof" enough for some of us! laugh

Personally I'd like to see a system built around ER32 collets as I have a complete set. I also have a couple of square collet blocks if someone wants to get designing… surprise

I suspect it may incorporate some kind of "rocker" system?

Edit: sorry, should have said, I know I'm Necroposting here but it's due in part to the other thread that linked here about the missing gauge!

              .

Talking of which … I have some of these 0.8mm on order

They are only the price of Panel Pins in some UK Shops.

Sore point, finding decent drills nowadays is pretty scarce.

Avoid the cheapy sets ie 1-6 x0.1mm for £30, good drills last longer and cut better.
Do have a fondness for older Hertel, Titex and if no alternative Dormer.

No point in sharpening up a .30p drill use them for punches.

I suggest buying empty drill indexes. One for imperial, one for metric, maybe one for number drills. Next figure out what drill sizes you will most likely use. Start with tap drill and clearance drill sizes for the fasteners you are most likely to use. Next the drills for holes you will need to ream. Then buy additional drills as you need them. There will be a lot od empty holes in the drill indexes. Your wallet will not be as empty as if you had bought full sets of drills.

Buy the best quality drills you can afford. I don't know the European brands so I can not suggest preferred brands.

Consider what you will be drilling and the machine you will use. If height under the chuck is an issue consider screw machine (stub) drills.

No, I did not follow my own advise. I have fulls sets of fractional, number, and letter drills. There are a few metric drills in a drawew that were bought for specific jobs.

I agree with the opinions of those who say "buy the best drills you can afford" Nothing good comes from skimping on cutting tools. Most of my drills are either Guhring or Titex with a few Dormers and Presto's thrown in. The Guhring's and the Titex's are the most spendy of the bunch [especially Titex ]. In fact, the Titex ones will bore spot on size, and nice surface finish to the hole. Never bothered with sets of any make, I just get them as I need them.

Bodge, never used Hertal drills, although I have a few Carbide endmills from Kennametal-Hertal. Top class mills and if Hertal is part of it then they will be good drills.

                      cheers.

I used the buy a cheap set and replace with quality drills tactic. I now have all the common and some other sizes in high quality, but will never get caught out if I need a 'letter K'.

I have a set of drills I bought in Ca. I very rarely use them for anything other than go/no go checks. They are my complete standard set of 136(?) drills in Imperial sizes. The rest are ones I have bought or picked up at sales. Some good and some less good. I keep tapping sized drills with the appropriate taps as 'sets'.

Over the years I have acquired several boxes and keep a couple of these filled with the drills I use regularly. I would no longer buy a set, but just buy in good quality drills in the sizes I need. I do like my part-set with morse taper shanks, but for best accuracy they do need a good sharpeng regime.

These days I might consider a complete metric set drills if a good set were to become available at the right price, but I would say that, particularly for the larger sizes, a good means of sharpening is a greater priority than buying in whole sets, of which only a few are used.

Look no further snap em up while you can or regret it, sure theyre around the £45 mark nationally, £70+ 6 to 10 x 0.1. Don't forget J&L plus VAT and min delivery charge.

Using a drill as a stop no go guage isn't the most accurate, they are all undersize an amount because they cut larger than stated size.

                              Hi Jon ,

Quite right get em while you can. I dont Know how to do a link but if one types J & L or MSC Industrial in the google search bar they should come up one can then one can view on line catalog and the monthly sales flyer. Worth book marking the page

Hertel drills are on par with Dormer, …Drill are made slightly under size, as its industry standard that they must not cut over size so i wouldnt recommend using using drills as go – no-go gauges , ok maybe if one just wants to get a close approximation,

Bought both sets couple of years ago, have been well happy with them, would have bought Dormer but they are silly money these days,…………b

while its a truism that you wont probably use all of the sizes, at least youve got em  should the need arise……..b
