      Hi,

My friend told me of a planetary gearbox one can make that sits on top of one of the step pulleys on your drill press. He thinks he saw it in the ME or MEW magazines. He does not own any, but his friend does. But as you can imagine it will take forever to find an article given all the variables….

I have an old Meddings drill press with a min speed of 500RPM and would really like the ease of quickly changing it to say 50 RPM. A google search revealed three useful hits:

A chap with one fitted to his drill press:

I also found various Popular Mechanics magazines from the ’50s and ’60s with adds for the same thing, called a Pull Gear with 7:1 reduction.

I also found a guy who made a similar setup for his lathe’s spindle.

But nothing on the drill press. I can figure something out, but if there are plans already available it would really help.

      Regards

          Hi Crystal Lattice
Part of the screwcutting gearbox for the Myford has a planetary gearbox, this might help to design and build one.

You need the drawings for the head spindle pulley off a Dore Westbury milling machine.

              Thank guys,

Now I have some more stuff to search for on google! I bought the inners of and old auto gearbox from scrap yard which has all the gears I need. I’m just not sure how the drill press mod work with regards to mounting and use.

From what I can see, something of the gearbox needs to be kept stationary for low speed. For high speed the assembly needs to be locked together and free to rotate.

I don’t like modifying machines too much, I like to keep things original as far as possible – that’s just me! I saw a video clip of a hypocycliod grearbox and it seemed like nothing needs to remain stationary which is ideal. Not so sure if this is possible though.

              Regards
