Although this video is about cutting gears I think the first couple of minutes showing a drill powered slotting attachment is quite interesting. Perhaps overkill unless you are going to cut gears this way or make keyways professionally.

It was mentioned on the Drummond Facebook group by, I think, the engineer's son.

Neat idea for a lathe slotter

Yeis indeed : That’s neat yes

An induction motor might be nicer though.

VERY neat ! there are many uses for a small worm drive box. It would be Good way to use a small 3ph motor and a VFD. Several holes in the output wheel/plate at various radiuses to give a choice of stroke. Noel

Especially for Michael and noel a couple of links to two of several YouTube videos of an induction motor powered variant

The induction motor version has vertical adjustment on the slotter tool carrier. Although it obviously permits vertical adjustment I'm unconvinced that there are any advantages to offset the inherent loss of rigidity over a solid carrier. Mounting on the cross slide and working sideways gives at least equal adjustability.

I did'nt understand a single word but I instantly liked that bloke!….a real enthusiast and engineer…I liked the way he spoke, the way he used his hands and also his simple but businesslike garage….. I would be honoured to meet him!

….Actually you can 'plain' clock pinions by hand using your top slide and you don't need any motor.

I'd have liked to have seen how he ground the tool profile.

I enjoyed the OP's linked video even though it helped only slightly to turn on translated subtitles.

Thanks Clive ! PGK grinding the tools is shown on one of the Tube programs linked above. On the basis of the time of year and how much I need a slotter now The small worm drive box I have is more likely to be used to make a kindleing cutter, the 12ton hydraulic splitter is a bit slow and it would be criminal to use the elliot M10 for this purpose, Cheers, Noel.

Quite so, Bob …. But, depending, of course, on size: You may be subjecting the slide and its feed-screw to excessive loads.

The stand-alone ram seems a much better tool for planing [at least to me]
