        Bit late to this particular party but no one seems to have mentioned file cards; like this:
        NICHOLSON-21467

        Using french chalk can be useful when using a file on soft metals but then I got myself a separate set of inexpensive files for brass, copper and aluminium.

         

        Generally, if I use my file card regularly, I haven’t seen any extra benefits of chalking.

          French chalk is talc. When ground finely it becomes talcum powder so that will do fine.  It is removed from the Pyrenean mountains near here in a vast open cast mine that is well worth a visit.
