          Hi Jordan

I can’t comment on performance of Dougal as a 5″ model but on other foruums people have spoken about it being a little light footed.

We spoke via the 7 1/4″ forum some years ago. I ended up getting a set of drawings and have started on a 7 1/4″ model I have the frames erected and castings for horns, saddle, couplers, wheels, eccentrics, smoke box door and front ring, frame stretcher and motion brackets.

One thing I did wonder about was if the model would be nose heavy and need some ballast in the bunkers and under the rear footplate.

All engines of this size need as much balast as possible, if you can fill the tanks with lead and have a top up device from a tank on the driving trolley. On my Gemma the running boards are formed from a bar of steel instead of angle, looks the same and adds some much needed weight.

A proper valve gear fitted to this engine and she runs very well indeed.

                hello,

i just wondered if it would be possible to get a copy of your drawings (photo copy) or something as i have been asked to start a project at my engineering gcse lesson and have decided to build a little steamer. i work on steamers all the time and so if you could help me it would be brilliant.

                  David,
I am building a 5″ Gemma, and am having trouble with valve gear. You mention a proper valve gear fitted to this engine, could you please provide me with details.
