I just bought some drill bits that were advertised as Dormer.

All my Dormer bits have either the silver band on the posh ones, or the name etched on the shank on the cheaper ones.

Is it safe to say if it doesn't say Dormer on it it isn't a Dormer?

        Thanks

I wouldn't have thought that one could categorically say no name means it's not by Dormer. However, I've just had a look at all my Dormer drill sets, and all drills above about 4mm, or imperial equivalent, have 'Dormer' stamped or etched into the shank. What size are the drills?

          Regards,

          Andrew

Have to agree with Andrew, I've found exactly the same with the Dormer drill sets that I have, 4mm and above, Dormer stamped on the shank, below 4mm no markings at all.

Thanks for your replies, they're all 10mm+ so no reason for them not to be marked, they are just stamped '10.0mm HSS' just like my Chinese ones.

All my Dormer brand drills are marked either with the name in a silver band or on the shank.

Possible best to ring Dormer and get a definitive answer?

I have Dormer drills marked SKF from some years ago when they were SKF Dormer. They are now part of Sandvik and I think no longer manufactured in the UK

I like the Dormer A002 split points and the similar A 022 stub length ones, get them from J&L/MSC

Have a look back through the classifieds, one of the Chris's was selling HSCo cobalt stub drills in 2.5mm by Dormer at a good price and may have some left.

I have checked my Dormer drills, and those from 4mm or larger in dia. are marked Dormer (either Dormer Brazil and a few Dormer England).

I've bought some off of eBay in the past, but NEVER EVER AGAIN!

                                      Not Dormer I should add

I went through packs of 4mm when I did the shelves between the BH600G stand towers.

They just snapped at the least provocation.

                                      You only get bit once.

That's a bit extreme for just a snapped drill!

Seriously, hope it's all going in the right direction for you Geoff (i.e. getting better!)
