Dore-Westbury mill. Does any one know if there has been an article on modifying the Original Dore-Westbury mill counter balance spring. The tension coil spring as supplied does not give a proper counter balance especially initially as it is far too weak. I am looking at using a Tensator or constant force spring to do the job. By experiment it needs about 10 lb force to give a nice balance. I have made a spring selection and it looks as if it will fit but wondered if it has been done before?

      Thanks,
      Dave T

I fitted a second spring inside the original one, that gave enough tension to return the quill.

The later version of the D-W used a clock spring inside a circular cover on the LH side of the head acting on the pinion shaft. If anything it’s a bit too strong. You are welcome to PM me if you need more detail.

            Thanks Guys.

I had thought of the extra spring but initially rejected it, in favour of the tensator, constant totque spring idea.

Looking at MK2 DW’s on line the fitting the spiral clockn spring will need a new pinion, I think. A lot of work.
