I bought this on Ebay, new, said it was a Rolson grease gun (£6.50?). I spent all afternoon wrestling with this very nasty piece of kit.

Firstly the grease packing spring was so strong I couldnt manage to screw it together and had to chop a third off to get a reasonable try.

The ratchet was flimsy and unreliable, meaning it would spring open without warning – dangerous

The so -ccalled bleed screw was very bad, no warning that if you continued to screw it in expecting to hit a seat it just carried on through into the cylinder, and allowed grease to spew out, very nasty and fiddly to get it back in to its thread.

Very difficult to bleed, still not right

I shall probably bin it, cant be bothered to raise a complaint and send it back, already wasted so much time on it.

Anyone know a reliable grease gun – I just took these things for granted

Hi Robin,

That is similar to a Wanner gun which I used to have, but they cost – around £60 to £70 for the basic gun. Re the spring, it is usual to tension the spring with the loop at the bottom , itshould be attached to a chain (or is that the 'ratchet' you mention?) which pulls the pressure piston down the loading tube so that the top can be removed to pack the grease in. It needs to be extra long in order to pressurise the grease. You should be able to pull it down and lock the spring tight with the chain (by twisting a link) if it's there, then you can screw the top off and load the grease, you don't release the spring until the top is back on.

The 'bleed screw' is to release the pressure when the gun has locked on to a nipple which is what these type of guns should do when being used. Otherwise you would not be able to release it from the nipple. Hope that helps

I bought mine in the early '60's when I used to do my own car servicing, it was a "Rom-Pom" gun and I've just found out that my son-in-law has it and has never used it.

Well it's on it way back to me as I write (hopefully). See image below.

Cheap? Yes!

Chinese? Yes!

Fake? Hardly – genuine Rolson Qulaity Tool by the sound of it.

That said, some Rolson stuff is great for 'semi disposable' or 'one shot' use because it is so cheap. I'd tow a car with their carabiners, but I wouldn't take one rock climbing =:-0

The wire stripper/flush side cutters are very crudely made but work brilliantly – I bought a new pair when I lost the first!

Ive had some acceptable Rolson stuff, but this was attrocious.

Yes the Chinese can fake Chinese

Things they do dont bear thinking about, rememer the cell phone batteries that blew up cos they didnt have a charge control chip

One thing I've found with cheap? grease guns, you have to use a cartridge to work properley, they won't work by packing with loose grease, which good ones will. A nuisance with special greases.

Guy Lautard wrote an article on modifying a cheap gease gun to a very good oil pumper. I think it was in one of his books on engineering/related topics.
