Search digital tachometer on eBay and for under £10 you will have a big choice. They use a Hall effect sensor triggered by a magnet.

Geoff, I used one of these from Ebay – very easy to use and has performed faultlessly for a couple of years now. Powered from an old plug top type power supply. I didn't even glue the magnet to the spindle, it just holds itself on. I did think it might fly off at high rpm but so far so good.

Here's how I fit one to a Boxford. Bought off ebay from China and it works great. The bracket is a thin piece of Aluminum which was bent to shape as a pattern. It's  still there 2 years later. 😉

I've been looking at getting one of these to put on the mill since I have a VFD to install.

                  Hi Steve,

I have fitted a machtach to my mill. Was very impressed with quality of the kit, quick delivery from the US and easy to assemble.

                  It worked first time!

I later bought another one for my Myford lathe.

Look in my album for photos.

Thanks for the reminder! I have a couple of Machtachs, one built up and working when I was living in a workshop-less rented house. Must get round to fitting it finally, now that I have my workshop!

As you can see from the link above, you can enter the diameter of the work (lathe) or cutter (mill) and it will tell you the surface speed rather than just the rpm, which is actually what you need much of the time. The alternative is looking up the required rpm from a table etc according to the diameter of the work / cutter and the material. This cuts out that extra step.

Nice piece of kit that went together nicely and just worked.
