        David,

I refer to my last missive about issues 38 – 40; now that all seems to work as it should.  For myself, and I hope on behalf of the others who sent posts on this matter, I thank you for your prompt attention.

This next sentence is supposed to be written in Basic Cockney, but since I ain’t a native speaker, perhaps you (and all the others born within sight of Bow Bells) will forgive my clumsy attempts.

‘ere, Dave, was you ever a member of one of them rock’n’roll fingies back  in the 1960’s; you and four uvver geezers?  You was famous then!

Or are you merely sick of such stupid questions?

I always figured that was why David called himself “David”, rather than “Dave”!  Besides “e darn’t look old enuff”   Talk about sucking up eh

Is the “total rescanning” complete yet ?

I am still having some issues with printing
issues 122 to 149 as they have edges that
show weird positoning marks and color charts.

Is anyone else having probelms like this?

I believe these positioning (registration) marks are due to the electronic versions being produced from the computerised layouts that are sent to the printers to produce the actual magazine.

I found that altering the printing preferences (namely page scaling/zoom) could remove these marks.  It depends what software you are using to print the files…

              Regards,

This feature hasn’t been working for me since last Thursday.  Is there any update on having it fixed?

I have just looked at this for the first time, the text seems very small and if I try enlarging it things just become pixelated and fuzzy.

To those who are looking after the digital issues, I believe issue 138 of MEW is missing the table of contents, and I don’t think that has been identified previously.  My apologies in advance if it has.

It’s there, Tom …. just out of sequence. Look around page 29.

Probably other pages are out of sequence too.

If you enlarge the magazine it is indeed ‘fuzzy’.  If you wait a few seconds it continues to download and becomes perfectly clear after a few seconds.  How long this takes will depend on the speed of your internet connection and how modern your computer but it will improve if you are patient while downloading.

Thank you Sid.  Obviously I didn’t look through the issue very far.  I think I threw my hands up in disgust at the apparent lack of contents page and moved on to another issue.  I did wonder momentarily why the issue appeared to have the correct number of pages – or at least an even number of pages – with one page missing

There have been quite a few of the issues that were like that, though most of them seem to have been cleaned up quite nicely over the last few weeks. This one may have slipped through the cracks or perhaps they just haven’t got to it yet.

Sorry about the screwed up quote on that previous message (quote and reply both under the quote-bar) . There’s a bug in this software (that I forgot) whereby if you edit the quote, you have to do it after you have typed (or at least started)  the reply. If you do it first, you can’t break out of the quote area. Kind of encourages people not to edit their quotes (the bane of internet forums).

BTW I don’t seem to be able to locate the recent digital editions of MEW (after issue 121). Are they gone now? Is it temporary? Or is it just that I can no longer find my way through the links?

                              Hi Sid
The “Back Issues ” collection currently starts at MEW 122.  So I suspect there’s a glitch that’s preventing issues 122 on up from appearing in both the “back issues” and the “digital subscription” collections.  Presumably temporary?  I’m not actually familiar with the way the “Digital Subscription” collection is presented, as I don’t subscribe yet.  I’ve been thinking about it, as there’s a few issues I don’t have in my paper collection that I’d like access to.  But the initial production seems to have been so fraught with problems that I wasn’t interested in spending my money on a second rate product.  I’m keeping my eye on things, but I don’t think the service is ready for prime time yet.  My own feeling is that each issue should have all pages (ads included) in the proper order (as per the table of contents, which will, of course, be included in the proper place ) before I’m really interested.  It may never get there.

Can anyone (David Clark?) state definitively whether the latest issues of MEW are still officially available online? I can’t seem to find them any more – or maybe I missed the link. I can find the Digital Archive OK but not the recent issues.

Also, under “Latest Articles” the ME issues listed (3547- 3549) as containing George Thomas’ articles on Bending Rolls appears to start at Part II in Issue 3547 and has no continuance notice. The other two issues  3548 & 3549) don’t seem to contain any material relevant to this topic (although they do contain more on the Staking Tool).

                                    David,
Are there any plans of putting the MEW archive on a CD/DVD yet. As a subscriber we have acess to the archived editions so a CD would save us gallons of ink and Broadband time.
Some of the US magazines have done this quite sucessfully with pdf. files and are selling the DVD, so there would be a market.  I have about 40 paper issues missing and would rather buy the DVD thjan download.
Also do we have to have the visual and sound effect on the archive as from a DMS viewpoint it is just wasted bandwidth, and adds nothing of value.

Weird. I get nothing like that. When I click on “Digital Issues” under “My Account” I get a list of pages (small boxes) running from 1 to 7. Page-1 contains issues from 121 in decreasing sequence and that decreasing sequence continues on Pages 2 – 7 down to Issue-1 (the only item on Page-7).

My view seems to be quite different from yours.

Nowhere do I see issues from 122 upwards. I used to up until a week or two ago and I have fully paid up subscriptions (and valid subscription numbers entered in my profile) to both the hard copy and digital editions of MEW.

Model Engineer Vol 191 No. 4206 has some scanning problems. There is the infamous “overlay” problem, in which the text and images appear double struck. This is visible on the cover and the contents page particularly.

Also, the far right edge of all pages is truncated, with about 20% of the right edge columns missing. This applies to text and images both. Page 430 is the first text page to show the problem, but most pages have it to some degree.

                                                1) Model Engineer archive Issue 4226 is labelled as being part of Volume 192, when it is actually part of Volume 193.

                                                2) Isues 4157, 4158, 4159, 4160, and issues 4274 and 4275 are missing from the ME online archive. Will they be available at some point?

                                                3) Issue 4206 has the image overlay problem (see post above).

                                                4) Issue 4255 will not display. I get the magazine viewer window, but it is all blank.
