Die Holder Sizes

Needing to produce a 3/4 x 10 BSW thread, I have been loaned a tao and a Die.

But having no holder for a 2" OD Dies, I need to make one.

Not wishing to over expand the Dies, and crack it, I want to know thew maximum diameter of the recess in the holder., so that the Dies can be adjusted to produce a correctly sized thread. (Screrw cut almost to size and then finish with the Die.

Despite sewsrching in my booksm and an hour's search, on line, have been unable to find anything, other than that the tolerance on Die diameter is

+ / – 0.008"

So should I botre the holder to 2.010", or dare I safely go a shade larger ?

just been to measure my die holders…i have a few 2” ones and they are all 18-20 thou over 2”

Was wondering if +010" mwould be too much (havong been loaned the tooling it would be a disaster to over expand the Die and crack it.

Think that I'll get bnracve and bore the holder to 2.015" and tread very carefully..

Now I can start work on the job!

most of my dies that are 2” are not actually split but solid

You need a bit of oversize if the die is to easily go into the holder.

I have one that is less than 5 thou oversize relative to the die diameters and it's a total pain to get dies in and out. Usual method is to screw a stud or similar into it to use as a handle. Its important to get the die seated true against the back of the recess which is hard without a touch of wiggle room.

some years back I need to cut a thread on site I had the 2" die but no die holder I managed using a jubilee clip with a screwdriver in the gap, yes bit 'sketchy' but done the job

Best of luck with using a die that size for accurate sizing where you could crewcut it accurately with a lot less effort.

Insulation tape or beer can could be used as a spacer between the OD of a die and the ID of its holder if the difference is excessive.

Every (handled, not tailstock) holder I have has three screws in it, one to expand the die and the other two to limit its expansion.

Like DC3 mine have 3 screws so OD not really critical. If your at Heacham I can lend you one. Noel.
