After many months of trouble free usage on this forum my pc wont let me stay logged in to the forum which it used to (unless I logged in on another machine)

I have searched the past discussions on this subject but there are so may conflicting answers I thought I would see if there is a definitive cure.

I use XP, Chrome and have cleared the cache, deleted about six cookies which seemed connected to this site. I have the 'remember me' box ticked too. When I close the browser and return to the forum I'm logged out!

Chrome has remembered by password and user name so logging in is not a massive problem but it is an irritation I would like to avoid. All other site I use are working fine.

You may have your system set not to keep cookies, it's the cookie that tells the site who you are when you come back, so you stay logged in.

I have noticed the same problem in the last few weeks using Firefox 31.0 on Linux Mint. It always used to work OK. Yes, I have cookies enabled.

Same here, Windows 7 laptop – Opera / Firefox / Chrome,

              Windows 8.1 – laptop, Chrome /
Windows 8.1 Samsung Tablet, Chrome and IE.

Opera doesn’t display a ‘keep me logged in’ tab of any kind, at least on my devices!

                John,

I noticed, a while ago, that [on the iPad] the checkbox for "keep me logged in" only appeared if I signed-in at the homepage … there wasn't a box if I signed in via the forum page.

                … Might be worth look.

I DO have my system set to save cookies! It always was and still is, although I deleted the ones relating to this site so I could start afresh.

I have the feeling that this thread will turn out like the previous ones on this subject. People saying what they have and how it does not work (or works) for them but never getting to the root cause.

I think the bottom line is that there is something different or wrong with the software that runs this site.

I could probably have worded my previous post a little better. A lot of people here put time and effort into trying to help with problems like this one and I for one appreciate their efforts. Its not possible for forum members to get to the root cause if the fault is related to the sites software.

Me too. It seems to happen every few months and then go back to working for a while. I suspect something changed in a Microsoft or firewall security update that somehow interacts badly with the cookie software. Eventually another change accidently or otherwise sets it right again. Some forums are ok for years so I always blame geeky programmers trying to be too clever.

I've raised a bug report. I don't have access to the underlying code for the site, and the people who do are part-time and support all the MTM forums, so a solution may take a little while. Please be patient, they do try and sort these issues but sometimes we can't reproduce the issues as occasionally they may be very specific to one user's software/setup.

Cheers Michael, I'll bear that in mind, although generally I open the M.E. and other homepages from tabs on the toolbar, but it's the same in Opera from either forum pages or the homepage!

Bazyle, think you may have something there, I shut down my (win7) laptop last night by mistake intending to put it to sleep (I wish) , when it rebooted, it took a while because it was' reconfiguring windows', now of all the recent updates, none have asked for a reboot but it clearly needed one!
Tried the log-ins from all my browsers earlier, and all except Opera now have the 'remember me' tab and I remain logged in if the browser is closed and re-opened later, so something's got changed!
This may also have coincided with a recent Adobe Flash update!

Not checked my Win.8 kit yet!

                          John.

I've seen that issue with a laptop of my wife's, it turned out that it had gone for the best part of a year without being 'switched off' so it had a huge number of windows updates queued up.

Thanks for at least trying to look into the problem. In the past, (mentioning no names) there seemed to be reluctance to get MTM backroom people involved.

                                  Oooh!

After starting this thread a couple of days ago it has suddenly dawned on me (at midday) that my PC now keeps me logged in!

I have changed nothing other than what I had tried before making the posting. Clutching at straws to try and think what I might possibly have done (other than the things I mentioned earlier), the only thing, and its a bit tenuous, is that I have switched the machine on and off several times.

So, I'm sorry I cannot offer a solution to anyone else experiencing the problem but from my POV its gone away.

Thanks Neil for raising the bug report, hopefully it might still get investigated and the vagaries of staying logged in might get a proper cure.

Likewise, although tonight on my iPad I found I was still logged in from my last session last night. iPhone still logs me out every time though. Strangely though on both iPad & iPhone, I only have to type in the first letter of my user name and the rest, including password, auto fills and logs me in!

                                        Hi everyone

I'm sorry you have been having problems. Nothing has changed about the way we log you in or anything to do with the remember me function since we started using this platform about six years ago. It may be that when your browser software is updated, cookies are lost and/or cookie permissions change. However, there are so many browser/OS combinations now, and so many updates to both, it would be impossible to keep changing the login functionality to keep up. Having said that, I mostly use Chrome or Firefox on Windows 7, and never experience any problems with this, and am logged in all day and every day.

I think this is generally a problem to do with individual browsers not keeping hold of your cookies. When I used a Mac years ago, I had problems with timeouts logging me out periodically, but I have never had this with any other Windows/browser combination. I spent quite some time trying to find out why this happened, but never found a fix for it.

I suspect Ipads/Iphones may suffer from the same problem as my old Mac did. I don't have access to any Apple devices other than an ipod, so I am not able to reproduce this though.

Whatever OS/Browser you use, you can only stay logged in on one device at a time, if you log in on one device, you will be logged out on another.

All I can say really is that nothing has changed here, I think 'remember me' has never really worked well on IOS, so if you have recently started using an IOS device, that may be the problem. On other configurations, it may be that subtle changes have been made to individual users browsers/devices at particular times which affect 'remember me' temporarily.
