Depth of cut

My lathe is a Myford Super7B with DRO.

I have to machine a 1" length of 1" diam BMS to .750".

What depth of cut and speed should I use?

I'm elderly and have to learn!!!!!!!!!!!

As you are not that used to using the machine play it safe and take four cuts of 0.030" each, Then stop and measure the bar to see how much oversize it is, divide this figure by 2 and make your last cut whatever that is. Should be 0.004-0.005"

Speed say 750rpm

Select the slowest auto feed as well

What is the lathe tool? 750rpm sounds fast for high speed steel but OK for a tipped carbide tool. I would suggest about 400rpm for a high speed steel tool.

The tool is an Australian tangential HSS and is almost the only tool that I use.

For an oldie it is so easy to sharpen and set to centre height.

I know there are lots of criticisms of the S7 but for all I do it is fine.

The steel is to be a mandrel to mount a cylinder (Perseus) so that I can

face the front end.

I used an HSS tool to bore the cylinder and I could not believe the

lovely finish it left. I did run it through four times without increasing the cut

at the and. So I did not need to buy a reamer!

Am very grateful for everyone's help.
