Deckel FP-1 Mk 1 – Vertical Spindle Question

Hello all,

I am finally able to start looking at the Deckel FP1 I bought a couple of years ago. It’s serial number is 11462, which from memory makes it a 1939 MK1 model.

I have removed the front section from the vertical head, to get a better look at the spindle. It appears to be different to the images I see in the internet and different to the horizontal spindle.

In the centre is the U2 collet, which has a very abused castellated nut. Then on the outside are two more castellated nuts, one inside the other. The mill came with two spanner heads – on matches the inner collet and the other the outer of the two rings. I can get the outer ring to turn, but not the collet one – mainly due to the damage to the collet.

Any thoughts on what is going on here? I had expect a MT4 – although I know that the collets can be a nightmare to remove.

Coming at it with a bit more intent I fairly easily managed to get the collet out of the spindle.

Now that smaller castellated spanner fits inside the smaller of the rings. I am guessing that these two provide adjustment for the spindle.

If I owned a Deckel I think I’d join and use this forum. https://www.practicalmachinist.com/forum/categories/deckel-maho-aciera-abene-mills.14/ I don’t know of a better forum for your mill if you don’t already know of it.
