Giant ship begins new North Sea oil and gas era

One of the world's biggest ships has begun a new era for the North Sea oil and gas industry.

The Pioneering Spirit, owned by Allseas, used its vast lifting capacity for the first time to remove a platform for scrappage.

It carried out the operation on Monday, and is taking the platform to a Norwegian yard.

            Awesome!

"Main diesel power comprises eight 20-cylinder (20V32/44CR) MAN 11,200 kW (each) engines and one 9-cylinder (9L32/44CR) 5,040 kW harbour engine with two engines each in four separate engine rooms (the engines with a total of 169 cylinders generate a total output of 94.6 MW"

Each one of those 20 engines would be over 30 foot long. Big job.

And fascinating tale in the wiki link on the the owner's father's WW2 escapades.

It takes about 8 mins into the video until it shows you a simulated / actual lift of a platform.

I was surprised to see Swans were still on the go and had survived from the purges of the 1980s, They designed and built the Derbyshire

The entire Bridge class had structural issues

Kwil, could it be built in UK? Last time I was in Britain(1984) there was virtually no ship building on the Clyde, I was staying in Paisely, I think there were two oil platforms, one new, and one for repair.

The MV Kowloon Bridge for example, her back end simply dropped off as she rounded Ireland
