Today I tried to get a quote to replace a windscreen. It’s not broken, just old and difficult to see through when in direct sun. Throwing a brick through it and claiming on the insurance would be dishonest, so is not an option. Rang a well known national chain. They wanted to know reg #, which is fair enough, let’s them identify the exact vehicle, but then demanded my name, postcode and email. No way, they don’t need that, but they insisted that GDPR requires them to record it. Suffice to say I just put the phone down. I’m going to have a go at polishing it, Frost Auto Products sell a kit

        Well-played, Duncan

I am no expert in these matters, but I suspect they are being ‘clever’ with their words … in that they’re giving the false impression that GDPR puts an obligation on you [rather than upon them].

As a useful reference point, I have some confidence in these people:

        https://gdpr-info.eu/issues/personal-data/

… not least because they are aware that the word data is plural.

        [ I find that strangely reassuring ]

Well postcode would have allowed them to know where you are, if in the back of beyond and many miles from one of their depots I expect the quote would be higher than if you were 5mins down the road. E-mail for confirmation of quote to be sent and name so they know who to send to.

Fair comment, Jason … but this was the line that caused me concern:

but they insisted that GDPR requires them to record it.

            No, it doesn’t

What GDPR requires is for them to protect it appropriately.

I just bought Cerium Oxide… it’s ‘the thing’ for polishing glass.

My job requires I know more about GDPR than polishing glass. The statement made by the vendor, as recorded, is not accurate; they might have some policy for recording the details, and they might have a policy about how those details are recorded that incorporates provisions for GDPR. The person on the phone might have conflated different things in their training. Have sympathy for the poor phone person. GDPR generally good but gets misrepresented often; not as bad as cookie law 🙂

The reason they want the ‘irrelevant’ data is simply to build up their marketing database. Small fry in respect of their larger business but selling the data will help the poor managing director get a bigger Christmas bonus.

I was proposing to take the car to them, so they didn’t need contact details. Telling them would have tied my car reg to my name and email, incrementally putting more of my data on line. Their representative was adamant, no contact details, no quote.

Local chap just gave me a quote over the phone, no contact details.
