My missis found blocks of DAS modelling clay on offer at a local shop and bought me some on spec.

I can't really think of any engineering use for it though, does anyone have any bright ideas ?

Can you use it as a mould for casting small parts in brass ? that's about the only thing that comes to mind.

It does shrink quiet a lot as it dries so that would need to be taken into account and I have a feeling that the small reinforcing fibres may be wood fibre so maybe not good with hot metal. Also make sure there is no moisture left in the clay before you pour.

When I was more into figure modeling I often used it to create paving, cobbles and brickwork for the bases so if you are into stationary engines it could be used to make bases for them.

I also use the terracotta type to make model bricks.

I don't actually make models ( I hear cries of " then what on earth are you doing here ? " )

I was wondering about the casting possibilities as one thing I do is make hand forged Japanese style knives. The handles sometimes have small copper alloy sculptures called 'menuki' placed in the wrapping, it might be nice to cast some of those.

It might not be any use as a mold, but it could well make a pattern for a small part. Bricks and tiles for an engine room and mounting. Ian S C
