As a matter of interest, has anyone machined the cylinder castings, and I do mean castings as opposed to hacking them from solid. I say this because of the shape, with compound angles, I think it is going to be difficult to hold them to bore. The originals were bored from solid using the four jaw, which would be my prefered method for the castings. But with the compound angle you cannot hold it in the four jaw, likewise this same angle will make clamping it to the cross slide or to an angle plate very insecure, as you will only have point contact. I do have a couple of ideas but I want to try them before I commit myself to print. If anyone has an idea I for one would be pleased to hear it.

        hi dusty &steambuff
i made my cylnders from 80mm square cast iron bought from collage engineering supplies at the harogate show and followed the instructions in model engineer using an angle plate and home made taper wedges 5 ,12, 15, 19 degrees and it worked out well steve has machined the cylnders from castings i’ll ask him to let you know how he done it
steambuff i am located in the north west not in sunny suffolk but i wish you well with your project
        regards

          Peter,

I am not sure how I am going to do my cylinders yet … it has always been the part that that has put me off starting any project.

I was asking Colin Jacobs where abouts in Suffolk he was located.

Is there going to be a set of drawings available or is it a case of just using the magazine articles.
                  Thanks

A set of drawings is available from Blackgates. (It’s a set of about 180 sheets of A4)

                      Hi Dave,

Do you know if those provide any extra details or are they just a rehash of the magazine drawings?

                      Regards

Cart before the horse. Blackgates drawings are from Ray’s originals, those in M.E. are rehashed from Ray’s originals and as far as I can see no extra detail, but the dimensions are accurate in Blackgates drawings. There appears to be no errors, as has happened in M.E.

                          hi ralph
if i where you i would buy the plans from blackgates as there are many errors in the model engineer
i would also recomend tthat you buy as many ready cut parts as you can as i have been on mine now since the start of the articles in model engineer and am only just stating to asemble the motion
other than that follow rays instructions and you will not go far wrong
                          regards

How many of these locomotives have been completed? a lot of the threads/posts seem to come to an abrupt end a long time ago.
