As no-one has replied to this…….
I make the thickness of each of the firebars 3mm.
Or as a not so good alternative 1/8″ (one-eigth of an inch) if we stick to standard imperial sizes like the rest of the model.

          Reasoning:
Length of ‘shaft’ which runs between two outer firebars is 3 7/16″ (three and seven sixteenths inch). Shown top of drawings page 141.
Thirteen spacers 5/32″ thick to be fitted = total thickness 2 1/32″ (two and one thirty-second inch),

Leaves 1 13/32″ (One and thirteen thirty-seconds of an inch), or 35.8mm of the ‘shaft’ to fill with 12 firebars – the two end firebars butt against the ‘shaft’.

12 times 3mm thick firebars fill this almost exactly (0.2mm too bulky).
If each firebar is 1/8″ thick then they occupy 1 1/2″ (one and a half inches) and the firebars are 3/32″ too bulky…. a bit of minimal and judicious thinning of the spacers should fix that!

          Regards,

          Phil

One problem with your maths there Weary. There are 14 bars not twelve.

Gives a bar thickness of 0.100″ so 2.5mm if you can get it, or cut from 2.5mm plate but may be easier to use 3/32×3/8 section if you can find it and up the spacer thickness slightly.

Oh and while you are at it peter, the spigots on the ends of teh 1/4″ dia spacer at the bottom of the drawing should be 1/8″ dia as yoy cant turn them down to 5/16″ dia!!

              I repeat: The shaft runs between the outer two fire-bars;
that is to say that the two outer fire-bars butt against the ends of the ‘shaft’.

See drawing detail on right-hand side of ‘drawing area’ on page 141.

The outer two bars are retained by counter-sunk 5BA screws passing through them into the ‘shaft’. The shaft runs between the inner sides of the outer firebars.
Thus only twelve bars are relevant.
              *shrugs*

                thanks for the replies
i think i have found the problem the shaft should be 3 17/32″ long making the the firebars 1/8th” thick everything then fits
i think are illustrious illustrater may have had 1 or 2 many oozo’s
                regards and thanks
