CVA No 79 Mill

I am considering restoring this poor old mill and I need to check the spindle bearings condition.

At the moment I cannot see how it comes apart. The 2 square headed screws will not move, I will have to make a 5/16 square socket if they have to be unscrewed.

Above the plate with the screws is a split collar which appears to be like a valve stem cotter.

The rest of the machine (now stripped down) appears to be in reasonable condition but I need to evaluate the spindle before investing further.

Any help would be much appreciated.

There is a picture of the dismantled spindle with the bronze bush lower bearing on lathes.co.uk but it is slightly different.

The bronze bit looks like it unscrews, like on a Drummond headstock

Drummonds unscrew anti clockwise, they press and hold the bearing in place

That round pin part may be the wedge that pushes a fitted bearing OUT at the split to allow the spindle to turn freely

The top picture has the split in the bearing if it's the only cut, it will be in line with the pin in the bottom picture if the pin is the wedge. if if if…

All guesswork on my part, hopefully someone with real knowledge will be along soon
