The evolution saws are great for thin material. The 185mm Rage which I have is rated up to 6mm in mild steel, the similar sized fury is rated for 3mm.
The beauty of these saws is that they cut cold and wih little or no sparks and very little effort or vibration.
I have cut 12mm plate in 2 passes with ease, and the blades seem to last for ever!

I must have been a good boy because Santa brought me the Evolution saw I wanted.
Just tried it out on some 3mm mild steel plate, works a treat.

I use an Evolution Rage 185mm Circular Saw for cutting MS plate. I must admit I was very sceptical at first but these saws are amazing. Max cut in MS is 6 mm however I have cut 12mm plate in 2 passes with no problems, no sparks, no heating, the metal is cool to touch immediately after cutting, see http://www.evolutionpowertools.co.uk/uk/evolution_rage.html
          cheers

Thanks for this Graeme. I have just bought one for £100 inc P&P with a free diamond blade from here:

I just tried my Fury one on some 2 1/4″ thick aluminium . It cut through in one pass like a knife through butter. Very impressed! ( B&Q , £49.99)

Well decided to put my money where my mouth is / was [ got no money left now !! ] and bought one of those Cut40 plasma cutters.
Wow, colour me impressed, surgically removed Gerts Barclaycard from her handbag with no damage to the kitchen sink.

Seriously very impressed, I already have a big plasma,  a Cebora 90 amp unit that is big, on 4 wheels, needs a HGV and is permanently connected to Ratcliffe Power Station via a 440v 32 amp plug so it’s not that moveable.

I thought this a portable one would get more use. Uses a normal 13 amp plug and needs dry air at 50 psi.Flies though 3mm plate nearly as good as laser, if it had a controlled feed instead of handraulics I don’t think you would see much difference, 6mm is still clean, couldn’t find any 8mm I didn’t want so tried 10mm and it cut this as well, not as good as laser but better than oxy-acetylene.

Cuts 4mm alloy fine, never thought to try thicker but alloy isn’t as good as steel, even lasers don’t give a good edge, in fact I have some laser cut 4mm alloy here and the plasma is very close.

Consumables are cheap, unlike the Cebora, costing about £11 for a set of 10.

Also unlike the big Cebora this one is far better on EMC, the Cebora will crash the office computer and the big CNC if used at the same time.
This one is fine which now gives me the idea of hanging a bracket off the end of the CNC mill bed holding the torch.
Switch mounted in the spindle, spindle not running !!, and the Z axis can switch it on, X and Y cuts the shape etc.

Small cutting frame to support  the work at the side and thrown outside when not in use.

                Hi John,

Please don’t do this to me.  It’s far too tempting to spend my insurance money on (when I eventually get it).

                Regards,

Just got back from Aldi. I wanted a small saw like the Xacta saw but cutting up to 22mm. The new mini saw from Aldi cuts wood to 35mm and mild steel to 6mm. I bought one but not tried it yet as my use will be for fitting a wood floor but thought to pass on the info to anyone looking for a saw which shou;d be OK for sheet metal.

The Rage saw is great, for those wondering how it works there are bumps behind the carbide tips that limit the depth of cut so that the tips can always cut their way out as opposed to kickback.

This kind of blade is mentioned in the “technical” bit on http://www.atkinson-walker-saws.co.uk with a few other details. They make blades for all kinds of uses.

                    regards
                    Alan
