Custom paint suppliers

Hello everybody.

First, I have been following the forum for several years now and very regularly learn something new from the good folk posting here. So thank you all.

I wonder whether I can have some advice/ recommendations regarding the following I need to buy 2 litre or so, of Doncaster green, satin paint + thinners, to spray a 5" gauge loco. I have to do this via mail order as we live in the west highlands. I have a colour swatch to send for colour matching, Who do you recommend, and what paint do I use.

Sounds a lot of paint, Phoenix do it in 250ml but may be able to supply larger

I tried Phoenix originally when trying to buy a tiny pot of paint, to choose the best version of Doncaster green. Because we live in the Highlands they wanted to charge me £15 delivery or if I wanted it in a hurry it would have cost me more than £30.

You are probably right about the quantity of paint, but I dont want to have to buy more later and to try to match it

Delivery probably won't cost much more for a large quantity of paint. Problem is it has to go by courier rather than royal mail so makes little difference to the couriers journey if its 5mls or 500mls.

I suppose thats one of the perils of living where you do. Down hear the couriers often have 150drops in a day as its not far between each drop but if its 20mins drive between one village and the next they can only make maybe 20drops a day so cost per drop must go up.

I did manage to get a small pot of railmatch paint inc delivery by royal mail for £7 or so and 5 very large aerosols delivered via courier for £6 carriage. so it can be done. if I remember correctly Radio Spares deliver Ferric chloride by Royal Mail albeit in an approved cardboard box . (Looked like an ordinary box to me).

I would buy a small tin first and try it out,then buy a large tin ,the best paints have disappeared off the marked in recent years,I have nearly finished a stationary engine ,worst paint I have used difficult to get rid of brush marks.plus when I looked into getting some more of the paint the colour is no longer listed. A friend using the same popular paint on a full size steam roller has just found blisters on the paintwork after about three months. I expect a lot of the problem is the move over to water based paint and manufacturers are not interested in special paints.

Try spraystore, the branch I use is in Motherwell, they can mix any colour to your swatch or from RAL or BS colours

Paint is available by the litre or in aerosol in cellulose or other base

Nigel, my experience with spray paints is very out of date (cellulose) ,so I am not very familiar with current materials but do know I am not keen on water based paints. I have had very good results with upol satin black spray aerosol paint on the loco chassis but it is not petrol proof.

Dougie, just the information I was looking for, Could you tell me what are the alternative materials to cellulose, pros and cons bearing in mind I would like a satin finish which I dont think you can get with cellulose?

Many years ago my Dad got a brush-on coach paint that dried 'satin' with the internet that you would cut it back to gloss once it had hardened fully.

hi anna,

try craftsmans paints. they have an awful website but do lots of authentic railway paints not shown. worth giving them a phone. all enamel and can supply in large quantities. otherwise Pheonix are excellent. i am not an LNER fan so cant help you with BS references or car colour matches.

if you can find a 2 part cellulose match that would be excellent. i dont know the match requirements but if you PM me i can probably put you into contact with some expert LNER fans who know.

If you are looking for a petrol proof paint then the one I use is URKI LAC, from spraystore, once it dries it is very resistant to petrol but I think it is cellulose based

The alternatives I use occasionaly are known as machine enamels, these are available as spray or brush on but arn't as petrol proof as URKI LAC, I dont know about the availability as a satin finish

You've already got a good selection there- but i can recommend Scott Paints Ltd, Airdrie for industrial enamels, 2-parts , aerosols etc etc. great service and very knowledgable.

Julian.I rather like the idea of using cellulose, I am familiar with that and if I can achieve a satin finish rather than

an outright gloss, that would be good. You write about a two part cellulose, by that do you mean a colour base

coat and then a laquer top coat? I will try the Williamson route kwil spoke of first ,and if they do not do cellulose perhaps I could come back to you.

Dougie. When I started to assemble the loco chassis, I managed to get a small dollop of bearing grease onto the paintwork. So I thought, a quick wipe with a drop of petrol on a cloth would soon sort that out. argh!.. black paint came straight off down to the primer, …….and thats how I know satin black Upol isn't petrol proof
