For those of us who are humbled by the work that Dave [Silly Old Duffer] is doing with his experimental monitoring of a pendulum … here is a set of four videos that nicely demonstrate the basic behaviour of Crystal Oscillators:

Note: It stops way short of GPS Disciplining and such, but it’s an interesting wander in the foot-hills.

With 244 views to date, and no comments, it seems likely that no-one will be interested … but I will link this anyway:

Despite finding his voice somewhat grating … I was fascinated by his findings.

Yes I did look at the first two. Wish youtube would link better along a series.

My first job was building a crystal oscillator at around 17MHz that was multiplied up to 11.452 GHz. It had to work within +- 3 parts per million over its life and over -30 to +40 C temperature range as it was part of the Intelsat V communications satellites. The first one was launched for Charles and Diana's wedding to beam the TV over to the USA. The oscillator just used a thermistor to compensate for the temperature and we achieved +-1.5ppm but set them 2ppm high to allow for ageing.
