Hi Ian welcome to the forum. There are a few threads about what machinery to buy, just put a search in the box towards the top of this web page, but no problem of asking what machinery is good for what job. Don't forget to give as much info as you can as it helps to suggest what can be best if not the cheapest machinery. Also your locality in the country can help as someone may have for instance the machinery that you want and that you can look at befor purchase.

Hello Ian and welcome. Can't really add to what David wrote so look forward to your post regarding what the lathe and mill will be used for.

Welcome Ian, as David said above and don't forget to add what your starting budget is – it often needs to grow a little when you get to spending! And a budget for tools needs to be taken into account too…

If you can find one near you, join a Model Engineering Club.

You may be able to see some of the machines that you consider as "possibles" in use, and become more familiar with them. Be aware, if not already, that the same new machines can be on offer from different suppliers, but are the same machine, with different colour scheme, accessories as part of the package, and warranty.

Also, if you can find suitable (size, capacity, condition one careful; owner rather than several careless ) machinery secondhand, you can get more bang for your buck. Also, a fellow member could come with you (IF we are ever released for 24 hr curfew) to check a potential used machine.

This should get you embroiled in a furious debate about the benefits of an elderly, used British machine vs a new or used Far Eastern product. Just avoid the flying handbags!

                      At last!

Today's news makes it clear that the country needs Engineers and their skills, to make ventilators.

Wonder just how long the recognition and respect will last once this is all over?

Howard, your question is not exactly a candidate for "positive thought of the day".

I have worked on several medical product designs that have reached qty production and made a difference to peoples' health. There is great satisfaction in seeing a machine you helped design making a positive difference in someone's life. Much more valuable in my opinion than recognition by media hacks , showmen, politicians, and fakirs.

                          Geoff,

                          You misread the post.

I am not commenting on medical products, which are the result of the skills of medics, scientists and Engineers.. .

My question was how long Joe Public, and our supposed elders and betters, will appreciate Engineers, once they have provided the equipment to get us over this present crisis?

                          Remember WW! and Tommy Atkins.

What few people are prepared to recognise is that the world we have to day results from the skills of Engineers.

                          Howard
