Hi guys has any one got a set of drawing for a small Cracker steam engine that are better than the one’s on the John Tom site as i an struggling with the gears i need to make for the drive.

The 6 drawing are a bit woolly overall, so if anyone has better set i would be grateful.

      Thanks Kevin

Look clear enough on my screen

          Gearwheel is 40teeth, 0.5MOD, 3mm wide, 3mm bore

Pinions are 10teeth, 0.5MOD,3mm wide over the teeth, 4mm wide boss x 4mm dia, ( 0.5mm boss each side), 3mm bore

            Hi Kevin,

Yes, I've got a set in jpeg form. Can't remember where they came from now but they seem clear. If you pm me with your email address I'll send them to you.

            John

can you get gear cutters that small or is there any other methods or can you purchase them but I suppose that is the easy way out as I have never cut gears

              thanks Kevin

Kevin if you want to buy – have a look at the Technobots website under steel gears for models. Just a happy customer of theirs.

Yes you can get commercial cutters – certainly for the 40 tooth – CTC Tools have one listed but not for the 10 tooth pinion. I suspect at that tooth number you're into modified form teeth.

HPC have the gears liusted in various materials – what matyerial do you actually need?

Ivan Laws book will give you the information for making the cutters yourself .

                Lots of options really

Kevin Wheel and pinion cutters are available from firms who supply clockmakers like Meadows and passmore or Cousins The price will make your eyes water

                    HI Kevin

I used the drawings from John Tom that were in PDF form and found them to be relatively good.

I made my own gears and pinion in the lathe and they 'turned' out fine!wink

I've also made a couple of changes to the overall look of the little loco.

Just a thought, is there anything suitable in Meccano in the way of gears?

I have had the oscillating engine working and runs ok

                        thanks Kevin
