I just wonder how many complained about the alleged slippery covers, compared with I am sure, the majority who were quite satisfied with the stronger covers.

I agree, I haven’t been a subscriber for long, however, I do feel that the change in finish is detrimental to the longevitly of the magazine. If it slides off the bench, then make a magazine stand – it’s not rocket science. I’ve used one for years, both in the workshop and in the kitchen, to support magazines, printed documents and cookery books, and htey work very well.
To all those who have complained about the finish of the magazine – stop whinging and get on with engineering, if you whine about trivialities, then I think you have too much time on your hands!!!

My last comment may be controversial and I apologise if it offends however, I have been in the engineering industry most of my life and I get wound up by those who complain and do not do!

            Hi There
The cover paper is the same.
It is just not finished with a surface covering to make it shinier.
            regards David

I’m with KWIL, Coalburner and Stovepipe too.  I thought the varnish if that’s what it’s called gave a quality feel.
Are the alleged complaints a smoke-screen for cost cutting?

Looked along the magazine racks today and ALL the better mags use the bright surface that has now been dropped by ME for what I consider are spurious reasons.  Real reason is probably too many shaky hands and a lack of a clear flat surface on which to place the copy!

                    I hated the finish

Satin finish always looks better for viewing photos (shame the swarf wasn’t cleaned off the base of the Maudslay engine ), and tends to cause a landslide effect in my ‘piling system’.

Totally support the cover change – the shiny finish was unnecessary and absurd.  If placed in a pile the ME slid all over the place and also tended to slide off one’s lap.

The quality of the ME is far more than skin deep but  I am sure that many people are attracted by shiny covers – good luck to them!

Yes I noticed the shiny cover, maybe we shouldn’t alert those who don’t like them. I myself have no real preference. However, I can’t tell the difference mentioned about the index pages.

There was a fad for printing the Index on a pale colour background, which made it wasteful of ink to copy it, but I did nevertheless. The previous Editor took some exception to my request to leave it on a white background, then he also used a lot of paper colour elsewhere in ME.

As middle age affects my eyes, the white background is much better for reading ME in bed

I prefer the shiny look too, makes it feel more luxurious. It looks a bit cheap and sad w o the lacquer

                                  Hi There
I think the photos look more realistic without the varnish.
Model Engineers’ Workshop has never been varnished.
                                  regards David
