          Have you tried these folks…

          **LINK**

They're not quick but the price is often reasonable and you can get an online quote.

Steer clear of Hermes, in my experience they have to be one of the worst couriers around. So far in the last 6 months they have lost 2 packages, delivered 2 others to completely the wrong address and left various packages in so called outbuildings that don't exist (we call them wheelie bins round my way!)

I think that's unfair to hermes. it's usually down to the individuals they employ. Here in rural wilderness wales the local hermes chap is superb. I think he's a part timer and member of our old f@rts club – always cheerful, knows all the out of the way folks etc In fact out here most of our couriers are great.. cos it's cheaper to buy mailorder than the petrol cost to get anywhere. the only real duds were the guys Chester used to send my kit.. turning up without tail-lifts despite instructions and wondering why I wouldn't help to move a 600kg parcel out of a small van….

                  Pgk,

not at all unfair, it's fact and it involves more than just the individuals that deliver in my local area, they actually managed to deliver a parcel 300 miles away from its intended destination! not even a similar postal code. Still trying to get that one sorted but they are almost impossible to deal with!

We used to have really good Hermes service but it has gone rapidly downhill in the past year to the point where I will never employ their services again. Just fair warning!

Been using Hermes for years sending an average of 4 parcels a week and receiving 1 or 2. No problems.

                      Hermes OK-ish in rural Norfolk.

AVOID, at all costs, SHIPLY!!! They are a facilitator for the people who operate under their name and accept ABSOLUTELY NO responsibility for any of their drivers failing to deliver … even though they require a non-refundable 10% deposit to use the 'service'.

The most remarkable service (as a receiver, not sender) has been DPD. Not only do they specify a one hour 'window' for delivery, they send an email with driver's name and present position on Google map, so you can monitor progress. Quite exceptional, but in 'rip-off' Britain I can't see them lasting very long, more's the pity.

Hermes are an utter disaster. Still getting emails from them about a delivery they should have made 2 months ago. Since cancelled and replaced by J Lewis. Private cars so as stated depends on the idividual involved. Saw the way parcels were thrown into a car boot what ever it was must have been delivered in component form in the end!

DPD and PC the best but had no real trouble with the major players despite being difficult to find.
