Stick them in the airing cupboard or in / on the boiler to keep them dry. If they are damp, you can put them in the oven at low temp to dry them out. Even better, get a sealed welding rod container.

I keep all my sticks in the airing cupboard and stick in the end of a blow torch flame just before using. The arc strikes a bit better when hot.

          Regards

            Helmet is disposable…

Very disposable indeed, don't even bother using it

Get an auto darkening one and decent gloves and you're good to go

Opens up a whole new world in metalwork for 100 bananas

edit: a decent bench vice helps, plus a wire brush/chipper, I also use a drill wire brush

edit 2 (lol) plus an angle grinder

I bought one of these last time they were in stock. Bought one of those metal filing boxes for storage which holds everything except the shield. Used it this week, still working fine.

A few weeks after I bought mine, Aldi brought out a similar welder but with a digital output indicator.

This Sundays LiDL offers included long gooseneck style LED desk lights. Picked up the last two from local LiDL today intending to use them as machine lights. Gooseneck is 2 ft / 600 mm long overall including the end fixings so flexi bit is a touch shorter. Nice compact light head and decently stiff gooseneck so should work well.

3 Watt, 120° flood type GU 10 LED in the box. Only 3000°K, warm white, rather than the harsher 6000°K, daylight, variety which would give a more suitable light.

But for a penny under a tenner who's complaining.

Worst point is the tight fit and excessive recessing of the LED bulb in the metal cover. Snazzy little suction cup provided to fit the bulb. Which does work but cup is transparent plastic. Mean time to loss probably best measured in seconds. TMT (Too Much Technology).

                Clive.

Just bought a "Rapporter d'angle numérique" (digital angle gauge) for €9.99, complete with branded lithium cell. Checked it against my Moore and Wright set square and it reads 90.0° so can't be too bad.

Keep looking in at my local Lidl for one of those small inverter welders, just missed out last time they were in. Any one get one, did they have tongs / earth clamp?. I suspect they would have to be bought separately so adding cost, plus welding shield / helmet, another £40+ if its a auto darkening shield.

                    George.

I picked up a Lidl leaflet on my way home from the dentist yesterday which shows for Sunday 19th an inverter (stick) welder for £59.99 and automatic helmet at £24.99.

Dropping into Aldi is also recommended if you are passing by one

They can sometimes be better than Lidl, more gear on display for longer

V8eng my local Lidl still has inverter welders. If you want I can get one and post it to you. Reimburse me for the cost and the postage.

Carl. Thanks for the very kind offer but my post really was intended for mechman48 regarding a listing in the new Lidl leaflet.

I had noticed these units at Lidl a few weeks ago, unfortunately my stick welding skills are literally more stick than weld, I am more familiar with Oxy Acetylene for welding and copper brazing.

                          Thanks. V8.

My local Lidl had 3v Lithium cell powered digital calipers this week, same model I've been using without issues or Lithium cell replacement, some for 2 years and others for 4 years.

I bought a welder and helmet from my local lidl yesterday. Haven't had chance to try them yet but look ok especially at the price. The shop opened at 10am and when I went in at 10.15 they only had 2 welders in stock , but quite a few helmets.

From yesterday (18t August.) they had lithium ion batteries and chargers. Thy call them 20 volt but they are the same as what is normally called 18 volt. I bought some of the 2 amp hour ones a few months ago when they were last on offer to use with an 18 volt drill whose nicad batteries had failed. I had to make an adapter from one of the old battery cases to fit the connector on these batteries. They work well with this drill.

                                      Les.

If you drop by the following week there have sometimes been units passed on from adjoining shops who didn't manage to shift their stock

Units get shuffled to outlets where demand is greater

Edit: Aldi do stuff online as well as instore now

I picked up one of the 20V 4A batteries for my cordless angle grinder I got a few weeks ago. Haven't tried it in anger yet, but hopefully it will give it a bit more oomph and/or runtime. Very pleased with the grinder. Variable speed and much quieter than my mains-powered grinders.

I also got one of the cordless multi-tools. This seems pretty nice and has a tool-free blade change feature which is handy.

@mechman48 I don't know what part of the country you are in, but they had plenty of welders and helmets in the two Bristol Lidls I visited. This surprised me as those items aren't listed on the website as current offers.

                                                      Brushless drills are about again

Got a huge boxful for 100 bananas, the alminium toolbox alone would be 30 quid

                                                      5 year guarantee

Over 200 from other brands, a really decent brushless unit

Only downside is it's pretty solid and weighty because its so tuff, but they're great for drilling metal
