I now have my Grayson lathe up and working but I need to make a new set of pulleys for the countershaft. The one’s that are on the lathe at the moment are made of plywood and have seen better days.

The pulleys are for a 1″ flat belt

Would it be best to remake them out of plywood again or are there castings available to replace them.

I could purchase some Aluminium and remake from solid.

What would be best and last for a resonable length of time.

I could proberbly find some flat pulleys, but thats no use to you, the ply wood pulleys, if well made, should last for many years. One suggestion I see in one of my books is a tier made of leather. Maybe even a steel rim could be installed. Ian S C

Why not convert to V belt, I did lots of this type of lathe pulley conversion in the 1960’s.

What you do is scim the 2 smallest flat pulleys flat then make V-belt pulleys from BMS to suit with 2 V-belts to one flat belt way, bore the new pulley to a shrink fit–say 0.001″ per inch diameter interference, heat the new pulley to blue and drop on to the flat pulley then make a new opposing pulley to match from steel or alloy.

IF you want a sketch to assist please mail me.

I made flat belt countershaft pulleys for my lathe and horizontal mill using 1/8 steel sheet rolled and welded .They have been going for 40 years with no trouble.

Hi Guys, first post here and just trying to find my way around so please bear with me, I have just purchased an old grayson 3.5" lathe myself and found this site when trying to find some more info on it. As per similar posts I have read on here, I have the lathe and a box full of gears but unfortunately no idea in which order they should be assembled! sorry to jump in on mikes thread but I wondered as you have your machine running now have you any advice on the gearing or anything else I should Know? I have spoken to tony at lathes .co but no joy as to any destruction manual.

My lathe has some wear in the cross slide thread and I understand a myford can be fitted again any help or advice would be very welcome. I am a complete novice at this so please answer in words a simpleton would understand,

Right off to see where I can introduce myself formally and have a proper look around the site

                  Regards for now Norm.

                    Norman

I can send you pictures of my lathe. I have it working but I am still doing modifications as I find problems with it.

I am building a 5" Simplex and I spent more time working on the lathe than I do working on the loco. Hopefully I will get it sorted shortly and I can get on the loco. On the whole my lathe works very well and once I have finished rebuilding the countershaft pulleys and a small job on the tailstock it will work very well.

I need to get it running at a lower speed so I am going to get / make a larger pulley for the countershaft / motor setup.

                    Regards

                    Mike

                      Hi Norm

I had a Grayson lathe some years ago and I always used the Myford ML7 gear change chart with no trouble because the Grayson has a 8TPI leadscrew same as the Myford

                      Regards Peter

Hi Guys and many thanks for the fast responses, Mike any photos you have would be appreciated I will try to message you my e mail address and Flywheel could you point me in the right direction to find a myford gear change chart please.

Can't wait to start refurbishing and get this set up properly.  I made up a small electrolysis tank today and a couple of the lathe cutting tools that came with it have cleaned up really well, they are from good makers but the previous owner had left them out and they have attracted surface rust, Unfortunately the budgets pretty tight so I am having to be a resourceful as possible so I can spend on any necessary machining or replacement parts required.

                        Thanks again

                        Norm
