That seems to be a reasonable number … so what in particular concerns you ?

These things were well designed, and were very well-made for decades.

Yes, the use of the terms Legal and Illegal is a little odd, and

I would just like to point out that I have Lego in the house so when any of my grandsons (I have no granddaughters) turn up they have something to play with. Some of the Lego is from my, and my wife’s, childhood and the parts still all click together the way they should despite some being two generations older than the newest pieces. So Lego has been made to very close tolerances for many years.

As for wooden Meccano there was a system called Bilofix that was originally a Lego product but, even though the main parts were wooden, the nuts and bolts were plastic. The wood was a lot less flexible than steel Meccano parts.

Just drifting slightly off-topic, does anyone remember Penny Bricks? Similar to Lego but much more ‘proper’ house-building-oriented, with red bricks in full and half sizes, bullnose and chamfered ones too, window and door frames with proper opening doors and glazed windows, and roof tiles (in blue) that actually looked like corrugated tiles and locked together?

I think I still have mine somewhere…

I remember a set that was similar Rob, but seem to think that the roof tiles were brown, and fiddly to fit together.
