Conventional hacksaw blades in Junior size ?

Simple question:

Do they exist, and if so, where can I buy them ?

I’m looking for a straight, not wavy, HSS blade with fine teeth and a modest kerf

… ideally with holes/pins at ‘Junior’ centres, but adaptors could be made.

Nearest I found was this but looks to have the wavy teeth of a “conventional” hacksaw blade and could not find the blades listed separately.

Would something like the old gents saw be an option, you can get them for metal and the kerf is thin

A bi-metal would probably be better than HSS as in the section you are looking for may be brittle.

 

PS I spent a lot of time trimming down the number of forum sections that we had prior to the new site going live, I still think there are too many and as we have managed for years without one for hand tools can probably manage for a few more yet. I would say the section you have put it in is appropriate as a saw is a tool that can be used in the workshop.

At my age, yes an Old Gent Saw might be appropriate, but it’s not what I was looking for: I bought a surprisingly good little frame last week, with a ‘pistol grip’ handle that fits me nicely … and I want some fine-toothed straight blades to use in it.

Obviously I use a piercing saw for some work, but the ever-worsening arthritis means that something with self-guiding properties would be useful, so a stiff blade with some depth and a narrow kerf would seem ideal.

Some of the little ‘Razor Saw’ blades for plastic models are about the right pitch, but don’t have much set on the teeth, and they blunt very quickly.

Oh well … I thought I was asking a simple question, and look where we are already !!

In a little-used, dark recess in my unreliable memory, I think there’s an entry under ‘Starrett’ for screw-head slotting saw blades. ‘Fraid I can’t remember what dimensions or fitting arrangements, though. Perhaps a seed for another famous MG ‘net trawl? If you find they are still available, please let us know…

Hello Michael,

Many years ago I was able to buy a supply of spiral cut hacksaw blades from a company called Weeks Distributors in Taylors, South Carolina. I included a small pack of Junior hacksaw blades having the same type of blade, of which I have a few left.

The email address for these people no longer works, their website takes you direct to sales for aluminium welding rods so I assume they no longer trade.

The blades are 1.65mm in diameter and slot into Junior hacksaw frames with squashed dimples at each end. They do of course cut in all directions.

I will happily send you one in the post if that will get you close to where you want to be. I don’t know if PMs still work on the new forum, if not my email address is wood_y(at)btinternet(dot)com

Note there is an underscore between the d and y

The Ivy blade looks to be standard Junior depth eg approx 1/4″ as do the Irwin ones

Yes, that’s disappointing … but at least both appear to not be wavy.

The nearest might be an Eclipse 12″ all hard 32t and a 1/8″ tungsten bit to drill the holes ? A 12″ blade halved by grinding might give 2 6″ blades, I know it would be wavy but might be the nearest you get. Good Luck and seasons greetings. Noel.

I was thinking along those lines, Noel, thanks … I have done similar with bow-saw blades [tree pruning]  … but I was hoping somehow to get a thinner blade for this Junior.

If you find non wavy bi-metal blades you can cut the back off them with tin snips and punch holes for pins in the appropriate place. I have a saw which has a 10 inch blade with most of the back trimmed off (not the ends) and it enables you to saw smaller curves than normal.

I have some very old 10″ HSS blades that are fairly thin.
You can get none wavy blades for junior hack saws, but they are for wood and not so fine teeth. Not tried mine on metal. Some of the cheaper blades do come thinner, but ones I have used have a short life.
They may exist but will be hard to find.

It seems that my memory was correct, if incomplete – Starrett #249. But like so much in memory, it’s now redundant. The blades seem to be Unobtainium. Progress. The world has moved on, leaving us old folk behind. So much of what we know/knew, and remember is obsolete…..(sigh).
