Hi Trevor Gale, I have taken it to a reputable service engineer, whose work I know can be trusted, and apparently this machine has two lasers, one for recording and playing DVD’s, and the other one for playing music CD’s. Using a good quality lens cleaner is the first thing I did, which made no difference at all, the machine will not even recognize that a blank or a commercially recorded DVD is in the tray.

      Regards Nick.

Many CD/DVD drives have TWO lasers one at 780nm for CDs and one at 680nm for DVDs.

If the 680nm laser fails then the unit won’t read DVDs but may still read CD’s. This appears to be the case with Nicholas’ player. A single laser CD/DVD drive may not read some CD disks that can be read on a dual laser CD/DVD (or plain CD) dive because the structures on the disk are tuned to the relevant wavelength.

        Robert.
