        I have to disagree.

        1957 ME
        Black & White printing only
Only 2 photo’s of machining set up’s out of 24 issues
“Event” photo’s low grade b/w to the extent that detail is completely lost beyond the immediate foreground
Some issues look like boating mags rather than ME.
LSBC and Mr Westbury producing high standard drawings

        2011 ME
High quality 4 colour printing throughout
Page layouts I guess (David?) 25% bigger and better laid out too
The bigger size means materially bigger drawings and photo’s and far more detail to aid understanding.
        Routine documenting of machining setups
Price equivalence, roughly the same.I wonder which mag Mr Westbury would have chosen for his 60cc Gas Engine?

A good example is the Nemett 15S article. The layout and large detailed setup photo’s made the engine far more accessible to novices than would have been the case in the 1957 ME’s and less Nemett’s would have been built.

Content then as now relies on good contributions and the quality of the current ME is an excellent vehicle for those contributions.

          Hi
          .

Our club the BSMEE which is over 100 years young has ME from issue 1 in its library, and as have been building a Class B1 been borrowing volumes and I have to say the content is today far more varied than it was then. and not just a bunch of people in waders with fags stuck in there mouth.
I agree with the critic who say that adverts should not be in an editorial and if so clearly marked in the header “ADVERT” this is normal practise and indicates that it is NOT an editorial reccomendation. I enjoy the varied construction articles because even though I never will build some of then the techniques (wish we had a spellcheck) I think Hi that is a good way of doing that.

So David keep up the good work

            What an interesting question:
Up the price by two quid and drop the advertising by half. If this was Cosmo or Women’s Weekly (I wouldn’t be reading it) then I would have to say go for it as the advertising in such mags covers such a wide range of interests that it is boring. But in MEW the advertising is spot on. It just caters to the nature of the rather small group of admittedly superior people who buy it. Not content with watching TV, we head off to the bottom of the garden, pleasure bent (though not in the way Major Bloodnok was) in order to make or re-flange the grommet housing of the wurtzelmangle defibrillator.
The advertising is interesting, even from here in Australia.
All that said, I felt that the latest issue was a bit light on for content but that did not make me consider cancelling my sub, I value the magazine very highly.

David, you are doing an excellent job, I like the format and the thirteen issues p/a.
I know that you are a busy man. I have submitted several articles and had none published so I can only assume that there is a problem with them. Is there any way you or someone else can offer comment on submissions?

              Hi Lawrie
              Resubmit them.
They may be hidden on my hard drive.
              regards David

                Hi David

Clearly it is not possible to have large images for every view of a project.

However with the internet being no almost ubiquitous why not post the uncropped and full size images and put the link in the resource section at the end of each article.

I also subscribe to Circuit Cellar a US electronics magazine, for some years now they have done this with images and source code and many other related resources, the link appears at the end of each article.

A good way to add value to the ME magazine.

                Cheers
                John
