Robbo and David George 1 make valid points, particularly Robbo, from personal experience. He provided invaluable help in sorting one of my recent queries by PM. I hope I that I thanked him but it was also via PM and would not have appeared on the forum thread. So, "Guilty, as charged, M'lud" but belated PUBLIC acknowledgement of his (and others' ) help with obtaining D-W mill info.

It was not lack of thanks that annoys me. (D.A.G did thank people for their help) It was the fact that he did not say exactly where the fault was and possibly take a picture of it so that it would help others with that lathe. Dave (SillyOldDuffer) went to the trouble of opening up his lathe and taking pictures to help D.A.G.. I would expect him to do something that would help others in the future.

The ones that annoy me (not on this forum as far as I know), are the ones that PM me saying I'm a final year mechanical engineering student at XYZ university and I have be asked to build a Stirling Engine. Why is he an engineering student if he can't come up with a design, my first Stirling engine was built to my design after reading a bit in Model Engineer, until then I had no idea of the workings of such a motor. Perhaps this is why I tend to distrust engineers from this country, and it's not China, or Africa.

I think (and hope) I have always posted my thanks on here for help and advice I’ve received, but with one exception – a very helpful forum member loaned me an engine hoist to help with getting my mill from my van to standing vertically on terra firma. While I obviously thanked him in person both when I picked it up and when I returned it, I felt it may not be helpful to post my thanks publicly on here in case he was subsequently inundated with people asking for favours. I’m still not sure it was the correct thing to do! Not only did I get the loan of an engine crane, but also a guided tour of his workshop, an introduction to his friendly dog and an interesting chat.
