Hi everyone. Im rebuilding a Colchester chipmaster which I recently acquired. I have the manual and I’m trying to disassemble the apron. Most of it is away apart from one which is the worm box. It has a bar that slides left to right but it does not slide enough to get the worm box off. It’s hard to explain so I’ll try to get a photo.

Basically I cannot remove 1841 Bar and 1903 Interlock Pin on the worm box assembly, which means i cannot drop it out of the apron. This is the only part left on the apron now. I can slide the bar from side to side but not enough to be able to remove anything. All grub screws are out too. Would really appreciate some help from someone with experience.

Take a look at these documents. The one called "Colchester Clausing manual" is a US manual that actually describes how to do stuff, rather than simply show an exploded view and a parts list. It's actually for a Bantam but the construction looks very similar, so perhaps it may help.

You probably just need a bigger hammer!

I see the "Notesto be readwithClausing" actually describes and shows it in the flesh. Looks pretty helpful.

There was article in MEW some time ago (sorry don't know which #) that described refurb of the auto feed trip on the Chipmaster. Don't remember much detail, but it was enough of a PITA to put me off trying it myself. I think that author indicated that the assembly wasn't designed to come apart!

Thanks for the replies everyone. Muzzer, that helped a massive amount. There is a plug in the end which needs drilling out.

Glad to hear that. Don't recall who gave me those docs but they have been very helpful to me too. All credit to them!

Thanks for the link to the files @Muzzer. I have added copies to the Bantam section of the Colchester group on Groups.io

                        Hi Adam,

In MEW No 187 John Connaghan describes how he dismantled and improved the fine feed knock off and dropped worm assembly. This will help you.

The two bearings in the feed assembly and the worm gear – do those need to be greased upon assembly? There doesn't appear to be any way to get oil to them after assembly.
