      Hi All,

I have a Colchester Bantam lathe – I’ve had it a few years now and it gets light use.

The feed screw was continuously on – which was fine and I’d use it now and again when required.

Now the feed screw has stopped turning, so of no use.

I don’t have a manual for the lathe, so I’m unsure what I’ve done to switch it off – or what would switch is back on again.

It’s possible its drive has broken – I’ve yet to check into that.

      Any ideas please?

      Thanks Paul.

Do you mean the lead screw which is the threaded one at the top or do you mean the feed shaft which is the one in the middle which provides the cutting feed along and across the lathe?

I think you may have answered your own question in the initial phrase above.

Type ‘colchester bantam manual’ into google or bing.

The first three hits are from Edinburgh Hacklabs, Ostia Tools and vintagemachinery.org any one of which will furnish the information you require (the shear pin you surmise is broken is discussed on printed page 12 of the first mentioned source).

Could also be you have knocked one of the levers and it is sitting between two gear and effectively in neutral.

There is dog clutch at headstock end of the leadscrew which is engaged with a sliding collar. Has this slipped out of engagement?
