Does anyone know the purpose of the three grub screws located on top, adjacent to the traiing edge of the cross slide roughly in line with the securing bolt for the traverse nut?

Probably for the cross slide stop that was available as an extra. There is a picture in the full manual, a search should find a copy for download.

They are extras – probably for a modification to whatever the three next to them are for.

Incidentally, it is well worth keeping closing plugs in such potentially useful tapped holes. It can be a real challenge to completely dislodge well compacted fine swarf from theaded holes. This could result in a cracked casting if not properly cleared.

I have a copy of the manual and it shows a 5 position longitudinal stop. RTFM !!!!  Just to make matters worse I have the manual out because I needed to look at the arrangement so i could remove the saddle!

A search for cross slide stop didn’t really turn anything up. However Lathes UK did show a picture of a Bantam with one fitted, so now I know.

Having never seen one it did not occur to me that is what the holes were were for.

I am fitting a DRO and rather than having a great length of scale hanging out the back I am exploring the possibility of placing the read head in the middle and recessing the top of the cross slide 1 mm to enable the splash shield to sit flush. Probably not necessary but would make a nice neat job, the shields would partially cover the holes.

I don’t have a Colchester but since you do I suggest you join https://colchesterlathe.groups.io/g/main then you can post a query to ask if anyone actually has the stop and if they could therefore send some more pictures to you (us) and Tony at Lathes.co.uk.
