Sorry for late notice. South London Branch of British Horological Institute has a show this Sat 5/10/24.

Free Entry. Free refreshments. Easy parking for a few hours. Near J6 on M25. Short walk from Caterham main line station.

It is well worth an hours drive. You can easily spend an hour going round. More if you have a horology bent.

If someone wants to hobnob with big cheezes in the horology world and talk about careers for younger people starting out then it is worth several hours drive – come see me and I’ll introduce you to the people who matter.

I would love to visit, Jack … but the journey from North Wales would be unrealistic.

Count this as me bumping your Post though.

Anyone involved with such exhibitions… letting the magazine editors have early notice so we can promote them would be appreciated!

Nice. This would have been very much appreciated. Marketing this event is the weak point in our preparation. The actual event is really good but we probably only had 300 visitors this time – the Hog Roast stall lost money on the day. I was there for almost 12 hours and still didn’t get to chat long enough to most exhibitors.

You need to consider the type of person you expect to attend such a specialist event. The larger volume events are aimed at parents/grandparents with children under ten looking for the weekend feature activity for the little terrors. Few of the 10-45 age group are interested in anything other than sport and media events. We manage 1000 a day at the St Albans Models that Move event which is the limit of our car parking capacity. Our show is very wide ranging and the title is a big clue as to the content.

A hog roast is not the sort of thing many people want unless they are specifically going out for a meal. Home made sandwiches and cakes are much more successful and need to sell at <£1 which rules out the Costco bulk packs and cakes which are also far too big for the non-USA market. Macro might have more appropriate items if you need to go commercial.

Teas and cakes are provided all day, free!

Kids have a great time – they get to make a spinning top, silver it, maybe a keyring, make a quartz clock to their design (select components from Walsh), and pick a 3D print. Once people are through the door they will be interested… it is just getting them over the threshold. 500 would be a nice number.
