Clearing my late fathers Workshop

Dear All,

I am posting here on the advice of a member concerning clearing my late father's workshop.

Attached to my profile are a few pictures of the equipment, it does not even cover the vices and numerous cutting bits and lathe attachments, or the draws of BA nuts & Bolts, or other weird and wonderful tools.

If anyone would be able to give me a rough idea of what I should be asking price wise, it really would be appreciated. I have looked on sites such as ebay and to be honest the pricing there is "interesting".

I am not greedy, I inherited a house so this is more about sensible pricing to find the right homes. I can then try the classifieds again with a guide at least.

Looks like some nice kit there indeed. What part of the country is it located in?

You'll get more for the loco if you can for starters tell what gauge it is, and most importantly does the boiler have any certification? If your dad was a member of a club they might be able to help, or it might have some letters stamped on it. Down near the foundation ring is favourite.

Thank you for the replies; I have replied to emails.

The workshop is located on the South Coast near Gosport. I did suspect a ML7, I was not sure if it was a Super or not but remembered Dad telling me about his Myford ML7, I think I found the book too.

I do not believe that Dad was a member of a club, most of the people he associated with to do with the Engineering were people he knew from his Dockyard days (Dad was a Naval Architect) and he knew Toolmakers, Fitter and Turners and lots of others he would regularly pick the brains of.

The loco I think is 4.5-inch saddleback "Bodmin", not sure on the pressure testing although knowing Dad, he probably did it himself; he was also a Diver and had access to the relevant air sources, I know he tested other boilers on previous builds (I have a Stephenson's Rocket and a double oscillating steam powered tugboat).

I will go down South in the next week or two and try to get more information/ photos,

The locomotive appears to be 'Boxhill' a (side) tank loco in 5" gauge designed by Martin Evans.

Searching 'completed listings' on ebay using appropriate search-terms may give some idea of value. Alternatively, or in addition, as a start-point a dealer will give you an estimate of how-much he would give you based on photographs.

You will widen your market (and thus possibly enhance price) by offering delivery paid-for by purchaser in some form.

It maybe worth you taking a lot of pictures and visiting a club near you to get more information. There is a club not too far from you at Wimborne. Dealers will offer you next too nothing and some others will try it on. Start by knowing what you have. Then put it on eBay

Agree with Michael. I see too many people talking about the amazing bargain they got from a sadly deceased model engineers tools being sold; so often the seller gets short changed.
