hi guys, I'm a german engineer and I'm building a Clayton & Shuttleworth 4 inch traction engine, designed by Gerry Dowd. i have bought supposedly the complete drawing-set. i have received the drawings and i find out that the drawing GD-1002-2 Sheet 2 is missing. i have no response from Gerry Dowd. my question, is there anyone who is owner and driver from such a model ? with the complete drawings ? Who is able to help me with my missing drawing ?

Greetings Udo, sorry to hear of drawing problems.

You have chosen a particularly rare model, so I don’t know if you will find , but I wish you the best.

I have a 2” Clayton & Shuttleworth agricultural traction engine and have not managed to find much info. Before I retired I was a mechanical design engineer so I was used to reverse engineering for making replacement parts.
Maybe you could help me? I need details of the cylinder block as I am a little nervous about removing it from the boiler without planning in my head what to do. I can only guess the method is it attached to the boiler. A few surprises so far!!

          regards

I think Gerry Dowd used to trade as Gloucestershire Steam Traction but I can find no trace of them.

I have put an enquiry on Traction Talk, a forum dedicated to road steam matters.  Will report back if I hear anything.

I got a reply from Gerry Dowd on Traction Talk.  It is as follows:

I closed this business (Gloucester Steam Traction) down giving my existing customers 14 months notice of doing so to purchase any castings they required in that period not one customer contacted me.

Before Covid hit us two of the foundries I used to use closed due to health and safety or environmental issues these were local to me in Gloucestershire, I looked farther a field to be shocked at the price increases that were quoted by other foundries deeming it not possible to continue. An example of this a cylinder block would cost me £200 more than my current sales price.

Covid, Brexit price rises and greed together with the fact I had a heart attack in July 2021 made my decision an easy one.

I am currently helping to complete 3 Claytons locally and will be building a final 6″ Foster to my patterns as well as finishing the 5″ Clayton Compound I have here.

However I do not want any new business and any one who thinks I have let them down I gave you all notice on the closure of my business on my now non existant webb site which I know was seen and has been commented on other sites.

Mr Dowd has my sympathy and the cost issues for castings are a big problem for our hobby.

              Martin
