Thanks guys it's obviously not a true scale model but if it turns out a reasonable representation of a class 22 then I will be happy. The main aim is to have a reliable good runner for the club track that looks half decent and doesn't need forever and a day to build.

I did think at one point that it would be nice to fabricate the whole body in aluminium but it would need a lot of sheet metal tooling and equipment which I don't have plus I don't have the skill, MDF and Ply I can just about cope with.

        Ron,

I think you will hit your target admirably. You are making an excellent job.

          Thank you Paul, appreciated.

Just out of interest I have no drawings of the full size and no pictures showing much in the way of close detail so my main source of detail is a N gauge model which I have. Its only 3.5 inches long so a lot of it needs a magnifying glass to pull out the detail but it is amazing how much detail it has for such a tiny model. I think I would have been struggling for information in some areas without it.

Vent grills added, 10 per side including the large one. I had them laser cut which I make no excuses for, they are far neater than I would have achieved from the methods I was considering plus they would have taken forever and a day.

Now it's 4 cab doors, 4 double engine access doors and 2 small panel doors. The doors I will be making and they are all glazed apart from the 2 small ones.

            It's coming along, slowly.

Ron are you aware of this website for the 'new build' Class 22. It has some good detail and a side view drawing. It may be a bit easier than trying to scale an N gauge model which is already someone's interpretation of the original.

              Image map | Project 22 (project22society.co.uk)

Edit at the bottom of the images page is the side view, not the one a the top.

                Thanks Dave,

Yes I am aware of the Project 22 site but must admit I havnt kept up with it. It seems to have more information now then when I first looked at it.

My N gauge model is by Dapol and I dont know where they got their details from but I wouldnt be surprised if it was from actual drawings as the detail is excellent and comparing it to a number of pictures of the actual loco,s it seems to be very accurate.

I fell behind the last month or so but I am back on the 22 and have added the 4 cab and 4 double engine access doors. The doors need glazing but that will wait until after the finish top coat is applied. Apart from some small areas the body sides are all but finished and there is not much needed to complete the loco ends.

Thanks Jeff it's coming along and not too far away now. I have taken a few close up shots for the album, here is one showing a pair of access doors and some of the grills (am I glad I had them laser cut).

Spent the afternoon spraying some paint tests, I had decided that I didn't want the loco in Blue or Green but would go with Maroon. There are 7 class 52 (Western) locos preserved, 2 of which are in Maroon which I have always thought look good. I always assumed the Maroon was Crimson Lake but apparently not they are painted BR Maroon which is a deeper colour. I have to use some modellers licence here as there are no class 22 preserved they were all scrapped. So my 22 will be a make believe preserved loco in BR Maroon and GWR livery.

I have some Crimson Lake paint which I test sprayed but was amazed at the different shades you can get depending on the primer/undercoat colour. The lower sample below is with light grey primer and the top sample is with brown primer and is quite a lot different in depth of colour and that's the one I am going with to represent BR Maroon. Both samples are one coat of primer two of top coat though the loco may have three top coat depending on coverage and getting a uniform colour.

The top / darker shade is a nice colour, the locomotive will look great in it.

I agree with Jeff, the top shade is nicer. (although I still have a yearning for that LT version.. ) Good progress Ron.

                              Hi Jeff,

Yes I think it should look ok, I,ve always liked the Maroon Westerns and talking of which the picture below shows a heavily weathered example in Maroon on my N gauge layout. I did consider modelling a Western in 5 inch but I am only just managing for space with the class 22 at 43 inches long, I would really struggle with something almost half as long again.

                              Ron

                              p.s.

Thanks Dave, LT..? do you mean the London Transport class 20.?

Yes Ron, that's the one, the London Transport class20 but I think MrsL may have been correct with her 'showmans' finish opinion – striking though.

Apart from the windscreens and wipers which come after the painting the loco ends are complete, some of the detail I will pick out but again after the top coat is finished.

Removable roof painted with two coats of top coat over brown primer. It gives good coverage and I,m happy with the colour. Its a bit darker than the picture shows and its quite close to BR Maroon which is what I was after.

I have been playing lights today, picture below.

Quite pleased with them, the headlights are 12 volt 10mm ultra bright led,s and the tail lights are standard 12 volt 8mm red led,s. They are copied both ends of course, the main loco power is 2 x 12 volt in series giving 24 volts. Four of the lights draw just 40 mA total so I plan on supplying them from one of the batteries giving 12 volts. At such a low current I don't think it will unbalance the batteries plus I will run the tiny roof fan motor from the other battery which should balance things out somewhat.

The camera didn't like the red tail lights showing white centres but they show fully red to the eye.

I will consider this a bit of a milestone it's been too long in coming but the 22 is in its final colour. Its a bit darker than the picture shows but it gives some idea.

I used a new to me paint which I am really impressed with, I went with spray cans for the main colour but airbrush weathering will follow.

The cans I used are Belton Molotow Premium (German) I got them from Jackson Art of London, £3.75 for a 400ml can which is great value. The paint is said to be int/ext, high pigment, permanent and high UV-resistant. There is also an extensive range of colours and the paint dries satin, the nozzle on the can is excellent the best I,ve used. Just thought I would give it a heads up should anyone be interested.

I am wondering if a Tesla battery would fit under a passenger carriage? The tech available nowadays is wonderful, it makes electric locos a good proposition for quick action.

I cant answer that as I know nothing about Tesla batteries but yes battery technology and related systems is pretty impressive these days and advancing at an amazing rate.

My loco will be powered by 2 x 12 volt deep cycle batteries, but its not just power they provide at 16kgs each they provide the weight needed for traction. Each battery sits above the bogies loading them to the track, if the batteries were remote from the loco it wouldnt be capable of pulling much of a load and certainly not a passenger it would just sit and wheel spin.
